This is the last update. IT'S IN YOUR HANDS! * Manchester United and Newcastle United are in the UCL. * Liverpool and Brighton are in the UEL. * Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brentford are fighting for the UECL spot. * West Ham will qualify in addition to these teams if they win the UECL final. European qualification explained: * Top 4 qualifies for UCL. * 5th and the winner of the FA Cup qualifies for UEL. * The winner of the EFL Cup qualifies for the UECL. The UEL and UECL Cup winner spots transfers to the highest placed non-qualified team if the cup winners have qualified through their PL placements. The winner of the UCL and UEL also qualifies for UCL, but the winner spots don’t transfer if the winners have already qualified through their PL placements. The winner of the UECL qualifies for the UEL, but their spot will be in addition to the 5th and FA Cup spots if they don't qualify through those. Thank you, hero

ShapersB

It's been loads of fun! Thank you for being a very welcoming community.

_Ritual

It is crazy that it is in our hands. Brighton should just do us a favour at this point surely...

Astonishingly-Villa

We don't need them to, we're the better team and Villa Park will be absolutely rocking. It'll be a professional send off with an emotional ending.

_Ritual

Sure we don't need them to, but they're still a very good team and it's going to be a challenge. I'm just saying they could make it easier for us.

AaronStudAVFC

This table has been a godsend the last few weeks! Thank you for sharing it!

ShapersB

Thank you, that’s very kind :)

JimGodders

3-0 win on Sunday. Send a statement that we're back baby.

Keysarr

Really nice graphic,

ShapersB

Thank you! :)

AcceptableKick8046

I just want to say thanks for this. I freely admit I find European qualifications confusing af, and this is really helpful.

ShapersB

Thank you, that's very kind!

Benzerka

I kinda hate the way this info is displayed, at a glance is looks like we can still get UEL, orange line should be at 62 and say "62 pts guarantees UEL", green at 61 with "61 pts guarantees UECL"

ShapersB

Fair point. It does say *above* though, which indicates that it’s a line that you have to *cross* and not *reach*. I chose to use *above* because it’s the only way that visually explains *how* the points threshold is determined - you need to get more than the highest potential 5th place finisher (for UCL).

AxFairy

Maybe shifting the 'goal' line up half an increment would help with clarity. I don't have much issue parsing the info myself, but I can see how the confusion happens. Thanks again for sharing these with us.

ShapersB

I had that conversation a couple of weeks ago, and the consensus was that the current version worked best. But that doesn't mean that there isn't room for other opinions. So I appreciate yours. Here's the mockup I made back then: [https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD](https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD)

AxFairy

Yeah that second one is what I was thinking of, seems like it removes the ambiguity. But like anything related to design, there is no one right answer. Cheers.

ShapersB

I'll keep that in mind if I make another version next season. Thank you!

Benzerka

I get that, its just not how I would've done it, thanks for the graphs either way

ShapersB

I mean, it's a fair point. I did have the same conversation a couple of weeks ago, and I made a couple of mockups: [https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD](https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD) The consensus back then was that the free-floating lines were more confusing. That's just the explanation, and it doesn't mean that I'm right, I just wanted to share the process of how the graphs ended up like they are.

ppuk

I think the best way to display this is to do away with the concept of the lines, and use shaded areas instead. That way if you're within the area for UCL you get UCL, removes the ambiguity.

ShapersB

Thank you for the suggestion! This version gets a bit messy towards the bottom, but it's certainly a viable option. I'd need to some more tinkering with the fixtures and find a way to create more contrast between the lighter bars (Villa) and the bottom area. Here's a quick draft: https://preview.redd.it/g2089d6k282b1.png?width=1922&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=ee71eedb920d8d2216bdd6e2af840c762da237bf

its-joe-mo-fo

Agreed. Same here. It's been a decent visual to refer to though

vorpal107

Reiterating my previous comment that despite this being a great visualisation, I find it unintuitive that reaching the line doesn't get you the objective, you have to get 1 point more.

ShapersB

Fair point. It does say *above* though, which indicates that it’s a line that you have to *cross* and not just *reach*. I chose to use *above* because it’s the only way that visually explains how the points threshold is determined - you need to get more than the highest potential 5th place finisher (for UCL).

TheKingMonkey

What would it look like if the dotted line was half way between the two integers? Like if it crossed the graph at (an unlabelled) 69.5, 61.5 & 60.5? it wouldn’t change the information displayed in a dramatic way but might make it more clear when clubs are locked out of qualifying for a competition.

ShapersB

Like this: [https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD](https://imgur.com/a/1fbwjuD) I made a mockup a couple of weeks ago, and the consensus was that the free-floating lines were more confusing. But I think all of the options are valid, even though I personally prefer the current one.

ppuk

You have to cross a finish line to win a race.

Borja_Baston

Is there any probability from data aggregators like Opta of us vs Spurs vs Brentford getting 7th?

ShapersB

Opta Analyst puts it at 65.9 %, 26.1 %, and 8 % respectively. 538 puts it at 56 %, 34 %, and 9 % respectively. Borja_Baston

Thanks! I'm surprised Brentford odds are so high to be honest, the permutations are stacked against them

Nekokeki

Fucking Gerrard stench still lingers. Couldn't have gotten us even a single point or three more and we'd have UEL.

ShapersB

You would need to beat Brighton, so that’s at least 4 more points depending on GD. The line for UEL is determined by the highest possible points total for the team that would finish 7th if they win everything. That’s you guys, so you would need to make it become Brighton.

Nekokeki

Right, but that's the point. It's mathematically impossible right now.
