Shinsuke Nakamura vs John Cena
For the right to face WWE Champion Jinder Mahal
That's the real selling point.
nZo vs Jerry Lawler (casket match)
Cm punk vs Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
Are the two I can think of right away.
Link to nZo vs Lawler pls
Luke Gallows as Festus main evented a Smackdown against the Undertaker.
Bob Backlund had a ppv match against Alex Shelley.
Was Backlund vs Shelley in TNA?
That Match against the Undertaker was really good iirc.
They even hyped up some psychology behind it--to wit, how can a master of the mind games like Undertaker deal with a guy who has no mind?
Oh, oh, I know this one. Was it “by being the best pure striker in WWE”
It was the best out of the Undertaker vs a big guy series they were doing while Edge and Vickie were trying to wear Taker out.
That match really had one of the most interesting finishes I think I’ve ever seen in wrestling, really protecting the character whilst getting the end result it warranted.
Long term booking for when Taker kills him in the boneyard match?
Danielson vs Kamala
...for the ROH World Championship
Cactus Jack wrestled Toshiaki Kawada shortly before his hardcore match against Randy Orton at Backlash 2004.
Kawada kicked a barbed wire baseball bat in that match.
That poor barbed wire bat.
That match was originally Kawada vs Goldberg, for whatever reason Goldberg couldn't do the match so they offered Foley the same pay cheque to take his place.
Cactus Jack wrestled Andre the Giant as part of a 6 man tag match.
Jeff Hardy vs Naito at Wrestle Kingdom 5.
Is that when Jeff’s phone fell out of his pocket mid-match?
Kevin Steen vs Jerry Lawler
I think Samoa Joe was in a tag match with Dan Maff vs Vader and Mike Awesome.
Obviously there's weirder examples out there, but AJ Styles vs John Cena. That never ceases to this day to make me think how surreal it is that that exists. And that AJ won at that.
I thought the matches they had were pretty damn good, too
Probably the best main roster matches of the past 5-6 years
Was Vader vs Will Osprey mentioned?
I forgot that happened! What an odd twitter build that had.
[Nakamura vs Alex Riley](https://youtu.be/vczjS5NG7ho)
[Rollins vs Marty Janetty ](https://youtu.be/HaSkTOG2zAc)
Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt vs Heath Slater and Rhino for the tag titles is like something Universe mode came up with in WWE 2K
King Kong Bundy vs Chris Candido
Jake Roberts vs Bobby Roode
King Kong Bundy vs. Matt Hardy (or maybe it was Jeff) also.
I think more people have wrestled Danshoku Dieno than folks realize. Like Jonathan Gresham, Finn Balor, DJ Hyde.
Chikara's King of Trios tournaments are also a great source for this kind of thing.
El generico vs 1-2-3 kid is still one of my faves 😁
Seriously, it's fantastic!
Genuinely the best match of X-PAC’s career IMO
The strangest one for me is the Ultimate Warrior's last ever match.
It's was Ultimate Warrior Vs Orlando Jordan in Barcelona, Spain on the 25th of June 2008.
This is the off the wall answers I'm really looking for!
Was this Warriors first match since he left WCW?
Yep, the match he had before this one was the embarrassment that was Warrior Vs Hogan at Halloween Havoc 1998
Orange Cassidy vs. Minoru Suzuki
Oh wait that didn't happen. Fuck you, pandemic.
I'm still mad about that.
Also killed the 3 Stages of Hell match between Brian Cage and Scott Steiner that had a bodybuilding competition and a verbal debate.
Wait what? This is the first time I have heard about this and I wish I hadn't because now I'm sad. Although Steiner would have absolutely demolished Cage in the verbal debate.
Thanks for the reminder. :(
Takeshi Morishima vs. Necro Butcher
- Jinder Mahal vs. Michael Elgin (at Arena Mexico no less)
- WALTER vs. Darby Allin (this one was probably not that weird then but it really seems so now)
- MJF vs. Hornswoggle
- Toru Yano vs. The Ascension’s Viktor
- Bryan Danielson vs. Shingo Takagi (what would be an absolute dream match now)
Minoru Suzuki vs Riho
Most Nitro mid card matches.
Some classic "only in WCW" matches (sadly most of these were on B-shows and not Nitro or Thunder)...
Kendall Windham vs. El Dandy
Masahiro Chono vs. Evad Sullivan
Yuji Nagata vs. Greg Valentine
Dirty White Boy Len Denton vs. Atlantis
The Freebirds (Hayes/Garvin) vs. Silver King & El Texano
One from New Japan: Jake Roberts vs. Shinya Hashimoto for the IWGP title.
Early 90s WCW was so good for this.
Edge vs Kevin Sullivan
HHH vs Alex Wright
Rhino vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Kota Ibushi & Yoshiko Vs. Danshoku Dino & Mayu Iwatani.
Not a current guy vs older guy but two current guys I never knew faced off. Gresham vs Rollins (Tyler Black) has happened more than once and it weirds me out because I didn't know Gresham was in IWA Mid South, I knew he was in NOAH
It's so crazy that a majority of indie guys, especially a decade ago, did at least one IWA-MS show.
The way Seth talked, they wrestled at least a few times on IWA
I'm going to be scoping this out on IWTV tomorrow night. That sounds like a match up I didn't know I want.
Also on Highspots for those with that! IWA: Mid-South might be an "outlaw mudshow" even compared to CZW at the time, but they did definitely get some bangers going. The earlier TPI tournaments, the Punk vs Hero feud, Necro Butcher's matches against more serious wrestlers like Low-Ki and Samoa Joe, etc.
I have a lot of the old TPI tapes and a few other great shows. They had some quality stuff going on randomly.
Dude, legit some of the best deathmatches I've ever seen too. I 100% put IWA: Mid-South up there with CZW, ROH, FIP, Chikara, and PWG as far as early 2000s American indies go.
IWA Mid South is absolutely a cornerstone of the 2000s indies, Ian may be a scummy person and the company has fallen big time over the last 15 years or so. But for a while, they were pumping out some absolutely killer shows and had a who's who of independent talent. TPI 2004 is one of the most loaded tournaments in indie wrestling of all time.
You ain't kidding!!! They were stacked 2 day tournaments!
bret vs misawa
it wasn't that good :(
First line had me so excited...
For British fans of a certain age, Giant Haystacks’ WCW run in the mid 90s has every match that feels odd. In that time he fought Scotty Riggs, Buff Bagwell, Alex Wright, Lex Luger and finally The Giant. Giant Haystacks VS The Big Show is so crazy to me.
Rob Terry vs Kazuchika Okada (Terry won)
Stevie Richards vs Kazuchika Okada (Richards won twice)
Also Ink Inc beat the unlikely team of Becky Bayless and Kazuchika Okada.
That Okada TNA run was wild, can you believe Shannon Moore has a win against Okada?
Didn't Jay Lethal fight Jim Neidhart? And lose?
Kenta Kobashi's other match in RoH (Low Ki)
Tadasuke vs Eddie Kingston for the CHIKARA Grand Championship
Maki Itoh vs Su Yung
Chyna vs Jushin Thunder Liger and Masahiro Chono
Takeshi Morishima vs whoever he faced in a random Raw dark match
Larry Zbysko vs AJ Styles
Cactus Jack vs Toshiaki Kawada
Scott Hall vs Big Sal
The Outsiders vs Naoya Ogawa & Shinya Hashimoto
Taka Michinoku vs Triple H for the WWE title
Cactus Jack Vs Toshiaki Kawada happened twice, in 1991 during Jacks only AJPW tour and in 2004 in Hustle
Ultimate Warrior vs Orlando Jordan has always been bizarre to me
Toru Yano Vs Jon Moxley.
Kenny Omega vs a 9 year old girl.
When did this happen?
In DDT back in 2011
* Bryan Danielson vs Kamala for the ROH world title
* Randy Savage vs Bruiser Bedlam (More known thanks to Darkside of the Ring)
* AJ Styles vs MMA fighter turned MMA ref Frank Trigg
* Brock Lesnar vs Akebono for the IWGP Championship
* R-Truth vs WALTER on the WWE UK Tour
* Arashi and Great Muta vs Christopher Daniels and Dan Maff for the AJPW World Tag Titles
* Minoru Suzuki vs Caleb Konely doing his 40 year old influencer gimmick
Vader v Will Ospreay
Ken Shamrock's first pro match: a 1989 loss to Barry Horowitz.
Chris Candido & Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Prince Nana & Kamala, Dean Malenko vs. Mistico, Bryan Danielson vs. Billy Kidman, Horace Hogan vs. Nigel McGuinness, Low Ki vs. Essa Rios (in WWF), all of which are on YouTube except for the Malenko match.
Will Osprey vs Vader
Nick Gage and Bryan Alvarez have shared a ring and Nash Carter/Zac Wentz has done a death match in GCW. The latter being weird because it doesn't seem his style, but he wanted to do at least one and he did, against Alex Colon.
Orlando Jordan vs. Ultimate Warrior
Chyna vs. Jushin Thunder Liger
Kota Ibushi vs a blow up doll
It never happened in this universe, but in an alternate universe we got Minoru Suzuki vs. Orange Cassidy.
Damn you Covid for taking that away from us.
WALTER wrestled R Truth of all people on one of the last WWE UK tours.
I think Undertaker and New Jack had a match or two in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. They feuded for a bit but live footage isn’t online.
El Gigante vs Nailz....in New Japan.
