Frayed Ends Of Sanity.

my_reddit_accounts

There’s a clip of Hetfield in tuning room saying something about how it’s a complicated part and he says “arghhh it never ends”, because the down picking is so intense

Dr4gonM4ster420

He was yelling at his hands saying: “Come on fucker work!”

[deleted]

There is no downpicking in that riff. It’s all galloped.

00cjstephens

That doesn't make it any easier!

[deleted]

Correct. By the time you’re at that section your hand is already fried.

[deleted]

Yeah, it does hahaha but not much

AdeptAcorn

Anyone got a source?

jchrist69420

I remember it was one of the james hetfield downpicking videos, most of them use this clip

Dr4gonM4ster420

[I got you my friend.](https://youtu.be/aWQFIMXOhdg)

zmooinator

That one is insane

V1p3rzach

Thinking the same thing

Apostasy93

That's a bonkers riff. The timing is so weird

Dr4gonM4ster420

Thus the song as a whole being the ultimate Metallica song.

Mr_Stkrdknmibalz_

This is the correct answer.

zodia4

Surprised I haven't seen Ride the Lightning. Gotta be one of the best rhythm/solo combos.

Mondodonkey

The best

buefordwilson

This is the exact one I was scrolling for. Such an insanely simple, yet epic rhythm riff under an epicly melodic and blistering solo. *Chef's kiss*

The_Majestic

I love the key change and the transition to the fast riff, for sure one of the best, i agree.

Goose_Guy_YT

agreed.

BigChunky29

I love the riff he plays during Kirk’s solo on Holier Than Thou

Absoniter

Came to say this. I love the way it whizzes around underneath.

BigChunky29

That’s why I love the Black Album. The 5 big hits may not be thrash but songs like Holier, Through the Never, Struggle, and even parts of Tread satiate that desire for some great thrashy riffs

hogjowl

They already proved they could thrash pretty hard with songs like Battery, Dyer's Eve, Fight Fire With Fire, etc. The Black Album is proof to the world that they are not just thrashers, but master songwriters as well.

BigChunky29

Exactly. Black Album, Load, and Reload showed their range (which I think is unrivaled among bands from the thrash metal genre). Death Magnetic showed that they could still thrash with the best of them and then Hardwired what I would call a happy medium between thrash and non-thrash Metallica

Absoniter

Yeah I've always, and I know others have, felt like a lot of the "black album" could have very well been Master of Puppets songs.

RieGuy146

This what instantly came to mind for me as well. Great riff

TornadoApe

It's pretty definitively "One" for me. Arguably my favorite Metallica riff in general.

RealWoA_Midnight

i’m learning the end of kirks solo but until i do i just play james’ part. it’s really fun ngl

IScaldPuppies

Blackened

PaddyPat12

That harmony gets me every time

IScaldPuppies

So chuggy

Harrysoon

Especially on the Remixed and Remastered version on Youtube.

Skrrattaa

That Ahdy Kharait guy? his remix of Blackened is the best way to listen to the song

Mr_Stkrdknmibalz_

Listen to the one that’s just the guitar tracks — so sick

Formal-Shelter9611

**Escape** (3:00) - I just love that "dada-dada-DAAAAH" **Fight Fire With Fire** (2:34) - It's mostly galloping "0-0-0-0", but it is so catchy and groovy, gives me some Meshuggah vibes xD **My Friend of Misery** (6:00) - Reminds me of some "Call of Duty Black Ops" soundtrack ("Rooftops" was the title, I believe). So heavy.

MugggCostanza

You mean Meshuggah gives you Fight Fire With Fire rhythm guitar under solo vibes 😉

Formal-Shelter9611

Yeah, exactly. xD

zmooinator

People dislike Escape, but I think that riff makes it amazing

Terrribleee1

Dude the call of duty part is so accurate people never believe me or even think it sounds like it

BlueBloodLive

The riff under the solo in Fade. You know the one, the single note riff that everyone sings along with. That one. It fits perfectly to accompany that blistering solo and is so catchy. Sometimes the simple stuff beats the fast full on stuff. Sometimes.

CinnamonDaFox

Fade to Blacks final solo section murders my emotions. It's simple rhythm section seems to be crying out to the solo, telling it to stop, the drums following the feeling of the solo. Then it all fades away to nothing. Not knowing how the solo ends (the guitar hero version doesn't count).

TheMemeMkaer

Oh man Cliff turns into Steve Harris on that one I fucking love it

clinteldorado

“Battery” or “The Frayed Ends…”

Irohnically_Cao_Cao

I dont care what anyone says, All Nightmare Long will always be my favorite solo rhythm.

LightGraves

Master of puppets

Simkata55

The riff in Unforgiven is pretty fun

zmooinator

That bend he does in the middle makes it for me

riguitargod

I was gonna say this. It’s subtle, but awesome. I love the little transition riff in the middle of it.

pigwalk5150

I can’t believe nobody said Disposable Heroes!!

Splinty2k

Atlas rise

xd_MrMan0601

Welcome home sanitarium

JamesDD4

Absolutely this 100%.

Musclepayne

Fade to black ending solo.

jayhof52

On the Mexico DVD, he looks so damned happy jamming at the drum kit under Kirk’s Enter Sandman solo.

Miserable_Bus6223

Dyers Eve

lovekillseveryone

Motorbreath is fun to play

HeavyMetalGolfer

Holier Than Thou

UltraUsername000

fight fire with fire

AdamEnokson

As simple as it is, Halo on Fire

10dot10dot10dot10

Dude. I also don’t understand the general negativity for hardwired. There’s some good tunes there. I’ve been listening since 89 when Justice came out, not like I’m a teen who just discovered them either. Whenever I listen to Metallica, it’s the first 5 or Hardwired. Skip right over load, reload, anger and dm. To me, they lost themselves mid career and are back with hardwired. And halo - along with confusion - are hidden gems on this album. So fucking good and “classic” Metallica.

AdamEnokson

Exactly. But people are so defensive of their opinions so thats why songs like Halo and confusiond on't seem to get the recognition they deserve. I mean Halo during S&M2 was incredible. I don't get how people can say it is not good

sanban013

Orion´s final solo.

mkesubway

Creeping Death. Puppets is pretty good too.

Jazzinarium

Creeping Death has a really underappreciated solo section, 3 separate riffs behind it and the solo manages to fit quite well with all of them

CPlushProductions

Fight fire with fire, it just fucks with your brain so much

01Robert01

Blitzkrieg is fire ngl

Matthopkins06

I never notice what Jakes part was or how pronounced it was until hearing bleeding me and the solo on that and James' part vs Kirks part.

Icy_Dragonfruit_9389

All of em. He kicks it up a notch when Kirk is slaying it

honda_accordion

Dyers eve

Effective_Ganache_85

Fight Fire With Fire! Badass!!!

RideTheLightning331

Whiplash, I know it’s just the main riff but man it helps make that song feel fast.

Norse-Berserker

Unforgiven, Dyers Eve, Struggle Within

_pragyan_

Blackened

Prophet_NY

Figth Fire With Fire where two guitars are actually doing the solo, the riff that is played under is the best for me

Comprehensive-Song51

All of them! I was actually thinking about this lately. It's so easy to get tied up in the solos that the rhythm stuff he's doing gets overlooked. I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but James does some really bad-ass stuff back there!

Metallica_Is_Bae

Probably in Ride The Lightning. Daaaa, da da daaa, da da daa da daaaa.

abyoo43

Bleeding Me is up there for me

burrekatt

All Nightmare Long.

Adrian__Weiss

The riff under the Wherever I May Roam harmony part. It‘s a bit hard to hear, but it‘s awesome

MugggCostanza

So many. Off the top of my head ... There are so many.

sassy_lil_sasquatch

the one in Of Wolf and Man

[deleted]

Holier Than Thou riff behind Kirk is awesome

danynero24

Ride the lightning

Syncopated_arpeggio

I like his stuff on horsemen. Both solos.

ThorstenSchmorsten

Creeping Death

titty_tim

I would have to say, all of them.

bradleecon

The Shortest Straw

Harry-potter-3214

Battery, Frayed Ends, To Live Is To Die, Fight Fire with Fire, Sad But True, RTL, and Blackened

IronMaidenFan1981

One

shinyrhodespiano

AJFA

fbloiu665

My friend of misery

Final_Worldliness875

Battery and Fight fire with Fire for me.

_The-Gay-Lord_

St Anger

breticles

Shortest Straw on the breakdown part. Where there are rest in the rhythm

Tomgar

Disposable Heroes has some awesome, dynamic riffage during the solo, especially the little harmonised guitar parts with Kirk.

KenOnly

Disposable Heroes

TheYoungMinarchist

Probably Fade To Black

jessemetfan

Hands down To Live is To Die

FanHistorical4666

Fade probably. Or Ride.

burgiebeer

Disposable. The interplay is incredible.

SyncronizedEmptines

Blackened and Frayed Ends are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Equivalent_Ad_5135

The one string line in The Day That Never Comes

oxymoron-alive

One.

Raidon35

Hit the lights

Floppuh

Disposable Heroes or the whole solo section of Cyanide honestly

[deleted]

Frayed Ends of Sanity..... Hear them calling me! . What a fucking awesome riff. OMG

workinmancjb

Don’t tread on me

Apostasy93

Frayed Ends, Disposable, Damage Inc

joris03

The Creeping Death background riff is so cool

f3m1n15m15c4nc3r

The answer is any and all questions is: Master of Puppets

Jazzinarium

Really disappointed in the lack of Battery mentions

tortlefeeder

Frayed ends of sanity, cyanide, creeping death, unforgiven 1 and 3, the god that failed. I could go on for so long

d_thstroke

there only 3 correct answers 1. battery 2. no remorse 3. four horsemen

esecretx

For me it's Ride the Lightning, Battery and All Nightmare Long :) As my soloing sucks it's so fun fun to play those when jamming some Metallica

Mrmofo69

Better than You off of Reload is really cool
