Zach Steffen starts for Manchester City

Zach Steffen starts for Manchester City

JJ-Bittenbinder

Shoutout the South American Covid restrictions for getting him a start

studsam17

Gets the picture too, not bad when KDB and Sterling are also in the line-up.

KevTravels

How did Zack do? Any particular highlights?

marshaller05

Had a really nice 1v1 save

susanasanjuan

he did well. controlled the box during a couple corners and loose balls, no real highlights in distribution really but the keeper plays a role there for city and he filled it capably. For my money he's the best keeper for the USMNT but I'm probably biased as a city fan

HauntingLocation

Also a USMNT / City fan but i agree that Steffen's ceiling is definitely higher than Turner's. Would love to see him get more starts for the US.

KevTravels

Hoping he not only gets the cleansheet but also gives the performance of his life.

WelpSigh

Unfortunately he's up against Burnley, who will probably struggle to have any shots to actually save.

Pace2pace

Clean sheet for Zach

Big Z

DarrylofSpades

What a bad ass pic!

dreamwoIf

I really like the Ederson-like swagger Steffen seems to be developing from training along side him. He’s not always superb with his feet but always confident on the ball and makes decisive challenges.

Hungry_Breakfast_967

It’s almost like training at a high profile club + getting some minutes in your mid 20s isn’t going to destroy a career with 10 years left on it.

LALASDIDNOTHINGWRONG

Absurd. Playing time is most important. Anyway, have you heard about this American striker that’s leading the Albanian first division in scoring? Also, Pulisic needs to move Edit: /s apparently needed

Hungry_Breakfast_967

Keeper is definitely the most toxic positional debate amongst supporters. It’s absolute war out there lol.

WelpSigh

old enough to remember people rating horvath over steffen

naka_itabashi

Meola over Keller and Friedel was even better.

rth9139

*After the manager position

KevTravels

I really hope this keeps developing as we need to see what he's learned from his time at City.

i_shenanigans

For real. I remember watching Steffen before he came to city and in his most recent appearance for the national team. Man looked just like Ederson with the ball in possession it was scary

Hungry_Breakfast_967

Serious question is Matt Turner capable of being a number 2 for a major club in Europe. Because I really don’t think so.

rth9139

Probably not. What separates the Edersons and Neuers from the rest of the good shot stoppers is their distribution, and these top teams utilize that. Their backup keeper being able to play the same style is more important than being an awesome shot stopper. That being said, many mid table and lower teams, who tend to play more counterattacking soccer, would probably prefer Turner’s plus shot stopping to hold leads. They don’t hold possession and play out of the back enough for his poor distribution to matter

QuickMolasses

The top teams frequently have the luxury of not needing a great shot stopper especially for their backup. The USMNT is not a top team and should prioritize shot stopping from a keeper.

rth9139

I would tend to agree with you about prioritizing shot stopping, but it’s situational imo. There’s a ton of teams in CONCACAF that will barely put high pressure on us. In that case, Turner would be better for dealing with the occasional breakaway or set piece, which are the only ways these teams are creating chances against us. But against like Mexico, I’d prefer Steffen. Mexico has the talent to push us onto our back foot and keep us there with a high press. With Turner back there, that becomes *much* easier to do: funnel it to him, cover the three short passes, then watch him boot it long. Steffen’s distribution forces you to also cover the 8s, or else risk getting exposed on the break.

aPrid123

Matt Turner seems like he might be the perfect keeper for Everton under Rafa Benitez.

Pontokyo

Easily, he was objectively better than Steffen in almost every metric when they were both in MLS.

Hungry_Breakfast_967

That was 3 years ago, though. Steffen is rightfully a different player.

mattbball88

Turner right now is the arguably best keeper in MLS I think if he wanted to he could be playing in Europe. He’s been putting up stellar statistics

EgoSumPater

but apparently a keeper from MLS is better lol

WinsingtonIII

If Steffen were playing regularly he’d likely be first choice for the US, he’s more well rounded than Turner is (Steffen is better rushing out and playing the ball with his feet). But not playing often is a big deal and he did look rusty against Costa Rica, particularly early on. That goal was savable IMO and I think both a regularly playing Steffen and Turner could have saved it. But he looked caught off guard and not ready for the shot.

bulbous_bean

He’s going to be starting for a PL club next season. He will be our starter come WC time (given we qualify).

cheeseburgerandrice

>He’s going to be starting for a PL club next season. we really don't know this

bulbous_bean

Wanna bet? Upvote for an upvote 🤣

cheeseburgerandrice

lol I would love to see it happen so I'm board with the idea. I'm just not terribly optimistic about what will be a 27 year old keeper who has either been in MLS or a backup being bought to start for a PL team.

Sam_ytbfff

he was pretty good for freiburg I believe tho, maybe thats enough

bulbous_bean

Okaaayyyyy you wait and see good sir

cheeseburgerandrice

🤞

WinsingtonIII

Is there a transfer rumor? I’d love to see him leave city and go somewhere he will start regularly.

bulbous_bean

Think he’s gonna resign with City then go on loan to a mid table team

JonstheSquire

Well that would be relevant if this was next year.

bulbous_bean

Huh? Did you read the comment I replied to? He’s talking about starting regularly and I’m saying he will be starting when we’re playing the most important games.

JonstheSquire

That's a risk assumption. Turner is starting every game and playing well now, which is why he should continue to be first choice. For all we know, a Turner will be the starter in a big league next year.

QuickMolasses

League is the starting point of player evaluation, not the ending point.

ShootersShoot305

He’s starting against BURNLEY mate

putcoolusernamehere

Turner is starting against CHICAGO mate

JonstheSquire

Turner will have to do more against Chicago then Steffen did against Burnley.

wantheman12

Burnley would win the MLS

QuickMolasses

Man City would beat Burnley with *me* in goal.

I_really_enjoy_beer

And only because City are being forced into it 😂 I like Steffen but I can't believe someone is actually making this argument.

EgoSumPater

if Ederson left city, Pep is confident enough in steffen where they wouldn’t have to go out an buy another number 1 keeper

I_really_enjoy_beer

I can absolutely guarantee you that they would buy a keeper.

bulbous_bean

If we’re speaking in absolutes, this is not something you could guarantee

EgoSumPater

burnley > the likes of dc united, real salt lake, austin fc

studsam17

Have you been watching the US games? Turner has had objectively better and more consistent performances than steffen over the past 6 months. Itd be one thing if He started every game for Man City, but he never does.

americanista915

Steffan got scored on in less than 60 seconds. It took almost 500 minutes for someone to score on Turner.

KevTravels

To be fair, Turner played a bunch of CONCAF minnows in the summer.

Reddidiot13

Bruh I'm pretty sure you just troll both r/Ligamx and r/ussoccer pretending to be supporters of both

ShartFlex

Says the guy who prefers the MLS striker over anyone else
