Amazon to buy MGM Studios for $8.45 billion
By - Jeffmister
Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have given a statement to [Variety](https://variety.com/2021/film/global/james-bond-amazon-mgm-barbara-broccoli-1234982158/):
>“We are committed to continuing to make James Bond films for the worldwide theatrical audience."
the reddit thread for this statement is located [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/nllitq/james_bond_franchise_will_get_worldwide/).
Important clarification on the Bond franchise:
>But even 007 has an asterisk. Amazon will own only 50 percent of the spy franchise. The balance is held by Barbara Broccoli and her brother, Michael G. Wilson. The siblings also have ironclad creative control, deciding when to make a new Bond film, who should play the title role and whether television spinoffs get made. (They have blocked such efforts in the past.)
Barbara Broccoli lmao
You may have heard of her sister, Betty Spaghetti
These sound like Veggie Tales characters lol
My kids loved Veggie Tales. I had no idea it was a Christian show telling biblical stories.
Understandable. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are pretty common names :P
Actually it was Rack, Shack, and Benny, you filthy casual.
The Broccolis, Barbara and her father Albert before her, have been Bond producers all the way back to Dr. No
You laugh but the rumor is, it was her, or more importantly her father, Albert R Broccoli's family, that originally brought the vegetable to the United States in the 1870's
No fucking way. Someone make this a Bond villain story
Bezos looks like a Bond villain - cast him
Broccoli is delicious bro, just don’t cook it til it’s soggy.
It tastes good and you feel like a Fucking giant nomming down trees.
Thank god we have Barbara Broccoli to save us from shitty Bond tv spinoffs tho.
For a franchise that happily used names like Pussy Galore, Mary Goodnight, and Kissy Suzuki, it's interesting to see what they're not prepared to use even if just for a cameo.
"Oh no, not vegetable based puns!"
Good. Someone with a vested interest in thematic integrity needs to be holding the reins.
jeez does this mean MGM would be a full fledged studio again?
The real MGM died in 1986 after Turner bought it but was too high in debt so he sold it off but kept the pre 1986 library
I completely expect Amazon's film division to merge into MGM. The various pre-1986 content acquired by Orion Pictures will make up for the lack of pre-1986 MGM content.
This also gives Amazon the opportunity to compete with Disney, Warner Bros, Universal, Sony and Paramount Pictures as another major studio assuming they're willing to make that investment into MGM.
Amazon MGM Whole Foods: Proud to be one of America's 8 Companies.
Soon to be a competitor to AOL-Time Warner-Pepsico-Viacom-Halliburton-Skynet-Toyota-Trader Joe’s
It's been purchased by Whitewhale
Of course it was.
I’ll get that whale. I can prove that he is a murderer

This thread is the strangest whiplash between "corporate consolidation will kill us all" and "new Stargate plz"
I think we know which matters more.
New stargate please!!
Same shit happens when Disney buys yet another studio to get comic book characters. "The X-Men are home" bullshit was all over the place.
It’s funny that less than 20 years ago we all thought Wal Mart was going to take everything over. Just like that, now it’s Amazon.
Microsoft was the evil empire and Google was this honest little startup that did one thing very well.
You’re right about that. Before Wal Mart it was Microsoft. There’s always a sneaky innovative company on the way up. Time will tell who’s next.
Well, Wal Mart actually fucked up a lot of local shopping, which Amazon actually replaced. Like, the effects on Walmart on my hometown and others like it were kind of devastating for small businesses, and as they shut down people were forced to shop more at Wal Mart.
Now, people are willing to spend more money for better products, but they can't get them locally because there isn't a "running" store anymore, or whatever, so they have amazon which has all these different running store vendors that will ship it to your door in the next day. The problem is you can't try on shoes when you buy them online, and the running store was shut down because everyone would go and try shoes on and then just go online to save $5.00.
Next up? Amazon Healthcare
Really waiting for them to buy the Amazon forest
Come on now. They can buy *any* Forest, and call it the Amazon Forest. Why buy the one that's shrinking?
Haha true but...this will help eliminate Google results for “Amazon” bringing up the forest = more sales
Oh that’s already in the works. They are rolling out Amazon Prescriptions. Healthcare will follow since healthcare just follows the funding
Great! I can order an enema and get "Expert Installation" in one checkout.
Why don't you take this chance to upgrade your Prime membership to full Amazon Citizenship? Simply pay your taxes directly to Bezos and he will issue you your new passport.
Amazon is already shipping prescriptions as a pharmacy
Amazon gas stations
Great! We’re so close to like 5 or 6 companies owning everything. That’s good right…
As a teenager, I remember thinking things like Aliens, Bladerunner and Cyberpunk (the original tabletop RPG) were where we were heading. People called me a nutcase. Not so funny now.
Ironically, the latest new edition of Cyberpunk changed the setting slightly to say megacorps aren't as powerful as governments in the dystopian future now... I actually laughed out loud and reverted to the old setting.
yeah but the cyberpunk dystopia they prepared us for was supposed to be dominated by companies with badass names like TYRELL CORP and ZAIBATSU HEAVY INDUSTRIES not dumb shit like "amazon" and "google"
Disney weapons manufacturing
Are you telling me I can buy a Mickey Maus?
Honestly adding "Heavy Industries" to the end of any name makes it sound automatically badass
Now spend like 8 million on making a half decent user interface for Prime
For one of the largest tech companies in the world, Amazon’s software is abysmal
Amazons settings on the website look like a giant link collection MySpace page.
I hate the way shows with multiple seasons are organized. Multiple seasons are organized like two completely separate shows. Pain in the ass
I feel this way about Youtube Music. You'd think they'd just scroll through Netflix or Spotify or whatever and get a feel for what people like.
It's funny because when you are actually watching something the interface is really good. It shows trivia and the actors in the scene, which is really helpful. I like that much better than all the others.
Good luck finding a show though.
I've actually noticed X-Ray being pretty good about not spoiling things, but I suppose it varies.
Only the software you see. The orchestration software that AWS runs on is masterfully good.
Yeah, I think what they really mean is UI. The basic functionality of the software is usually fine.
My wife and I always marvel at how non-intuitive the UI is for both Prime and for the Amazon fire stick. And the covershots they use for the movies have so much packed in, with no emphasis on the title, so that everything just kind of blends into one big chaotic mess. At least that's how my ADHD makes me see it. When I use Netflix after, I'm so appreciative of how clear and simple the layout is.
Yeah it’s insane how much of the internet runs on AWS
people think Amazon is worth a lot because of the e-commerce site...nope
Its shocking compared to netflix🤦♀️
It is genuinely vile. And if you happen to buy titles off their service and they lose the licence to it years later, you have to go through your entire library to the point of purchase because you can't search for it anymore.
Prime video is God awful
Instead of roaring now the MGM lion will tell you other movies you may enjoy based on this one.
So Jeff Bezos is potentially the next Bond villain?
Nah, now that he owns MGM the next Bond villain will be a working class factory worker looking for better wages who terrorises their poor unfortunate billionaire employer

Every time there is one of these big mergers they should have to jam the name of the acquired studio into the acquirer’s name like **Amgmazon**
I love that Hearthstone card!
But AOL-Time-Warner-Pepsico-Viacom-Halliburton-Skynet-Toyota-Trader-Joe's makes great products!
Trader Joe’s is actually owned by Aldi Nord (Aldi North in English), which is based in Essen, Germany. It operates some Aldi stores throughout Europe. Aldi Süd (Aldi South) based in Mülheim Germany also operates Aldi stores in Europe and the Aldi stores in the US.
The two companies resulted from a split between the two brothers who owned it. Although they share a common brand, Aldi (**Al**brecht **Di**skont), they mostly operate independently.
Other than some small ventures, both brands operate almost exclusively in grocery and are still privately owned.
In the future, imagine if the two Aldis bought all other corporations, leading to the Aldi wars of Nord vs Süd. What a timeline that would be
The Nord remembers
Lol I always think about Bojack when these mergers happen and how in the last season, Guy goes “so how many companies are there now, three?”
Or Parks and Rec: "Verizon Chipotle Exxon, proud to be one of America's eight companies!"
Funny. Never watched that show but sends like there’s some solid satire. The paunch burger commercial is evidence of that as well
Amazing show. Highly recommend.
~~AOL~~ AT&T is trying to shed Time-Warner, which may or may not merge with Discovery, Inc, depending on antitrust shit. The new company could potentially be called Discovery-Time, which is pretty amusing.
Or we could force them to keep all the names and hyphentate it. Kind of like Lockheed Martin (err... Lockheed-Martin-Wright-AmericanAsphalt-MariettaPaintAndColor)
20th Lucenturyas Dismarvelney Fox
I already like where this is going
I can't wait for the Amazon/Disney/Alphabet faction wars.
The crossover episode to end all crossover episodes
\>8+ billion for Bond
\>5 dollars and an intern for the Prime Video UI
I would actually love to hear some theories on why on earth a company like that doesn’t improve their UI for such an important product.
Whenever I’m looking for something to stream amazon is my last resort of the 4 services I subscribe to.
It’s probably better than other services at organizing content and doing search. It also has quite a lot of content. But it’s still my last resort cause I hate that UI so much.
>*I would actually love to hear some theories on why on earth a company like that doesn’t improve their UI for such an important product.*
Because you, and many others, are still subscribing regardless of the UI. Why bother investing in that when people are still using the product whether it gets updated or not?
> "Buy N Large, It's a Super Store"
The irony is its a Pixar movie, which got bought out by Disney.
Broccoli's still control creative power over Bond
And from what I've read the Broccolis are adamant about Bond being in cinemas and not having any TV shows etc.
Yeah get a move on Amazon, those Canadian woodlands aren't going to film themselves
It's amazing how many planets all over the galaxy look like Vancouver.
Say what you want about the Goa'uld, but they had a phenomenal National Parks program!
I'll gladly get skullfucked by a snake for this level of environmentalism
Run by Leslie Ka'nope.
They're all just chunks of the one original planet, Vancouver Prime.
It kind of makes sense that a hyper advanced civilization of intergalactic explorers would put their teleportation rings on planets that were hospitable to them.
Is *that* where SG-1 was filmed? Where was the indoor studio? I always thought how big of a pain that show must have been to film because half an episode would be on an indoor set and the other in the woods.
Yep, Vancouver https://moviemaps.org/movies/1e
With The Expanse ending they'll have a nice SciFi slot to fill.
Considering that Jeff Bezos is a SciFi fan and Stargate is one of the major franchises MGM has, this seems likely.
Also Amazon tried bringing out a game, which kinda.... failed and MGM announced a new Stargate game, which spread like fire in the Stargate community.
My hope is huge. Also that he might bring back SGU.
I’m doing a re-watch of SG1 right now. It is SO GOOD! Well it isn’t exactly “SO GOOD” but I love it anyways.
No, it is SO GOOD. Fucking Window of Opportunity is one of my favorite sci fi episodes of all time
Yes! And although not as highly rated, I really liked The Other Side just a few episodes before it.
Those middle seasons with RDA fully committed to the show were really good.
"I lost my son!"
One of the best-delivered lines in history. So simple, but so perfect and heartbreaking on several levels.
Basically the only possible silver lining here
everyone else : "oh no, amazon grows larger, the industry shrinks, danger"
me: "haha jaffa go Kree"
Hehe, Stargate go KAWOOOOOSH
And the industry shrinks yet again.
MGM was bankrupt. Either it was bought or would go away completely.
Yeah, MGM was bound to go to someone at some point. Truth be told, I'm surprised it's taken this long.
I mean someone would buy it. Worst case MGM keeps lowering the price until SOMEONE did. The equity firm that owns it wanted to sell, so the question was just who would buy it.
And nobody that isn't in the industry would be buying it. Consolidation was inevitable.
we need a Teddy Roosevelt
Trust Busters Unite!
Hoorah Brother !
Interestingly enough, W.H. Taft was actually a much more successful trust-buster than Teddy.
And yet American still largely recognizes Teddy Roosevelt as the great monopoly fighter. I suppose you could say the big fella took the "speak softly and carry a big stick" slogan to heart!
Bring back Ted and Taft. Let the boys have one last Hoorah ✊😔
Amazon had to spend all of those tax savings somehow.
The year is 2045
I sit in my amazon delivered home, drinking my amazon flavored slurpee.
Suddenly a commerical on my amazon transparent TV. I jump for a joy! The new Dwayne "2 day delivery" Johnson is starring in the new Resident Evil "resident delivery: CUSTOMER SERVICE"
I slump back into my Amazon recliner, satsified with my day. Jeff Bezo has done it.
He owns me.
Wall-E is apparently a documentary
So this must be how my dog feels...
Drink Verification Can™
It will be interesting to see what they do with some of the MGM content, A new Stargate series seems imminent and no doubt they'll do something with the Bond Franchise
> A new Stargate series seems imminent
I really hope, if it happens, they stick to Action-Adventure storytelling with an overarching plot(like SG-1).
the og show runners where in the talks to bring it back
The Bond film series itself seems to be regarded as a sacred cow of sorts, especially by the Broccoli family - who still have creative control over the property, however… I wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon at least attempted to pitch a show set in the bond universe. I could see a show following an “Agent 008”-type that interacts with Q, M, Moneypenny, etc. while also never having to interact with Bond himself being believable being explained away by MI6 siloing it’s agents off from one another for security reasons.
No it didn’t. As early as Goldfinger they references other agents like 008. In the next film they had Bond in a briefing with all other active 00’s. Multiple Moore films had other 00’s. The Dalton run starts with 3 double 0 agents on a test run.
Bezos should release The Apprentice behind the scenes
What if Bezos turned out to be a far more petty man than Trump could ever dream of being, and that's exactly what's on his mind?
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Please... Please... Please... Give Prime Video a UI overhaul so I'll actually be able to enjoy some of these films without having to have the headache of navigating through the current one.
As the Amazon delivery driver tightened the cap on his freshly christened piss bottle, he thought, “man this is surely a good use of corporate funds!”
Bond now gets all his gadgets by ordering them through Alexa with same day shipping
They're all Chinese knockoffs that break on first use
Release the China cut of Red Dawn!
Fantastic! We are only 2 mergers away from getting "worldcorp studios". Then lord bezos will finally allow us to watch whatever we want.
Damn. Good thing the government is about to give Bezos a $10b bailout for his Blue Origin project. Wouldn't want him to be completely poor and miss out on deals like this, would we.
And two weeks ago he bought a yacht that comes with a support yacht while Amazon meddled in its employees unionization efforts.
Wow. Who would’ve thought that the best way to beat James Bond — is to have the world’s richest supervillain buy the studio that owns his films!
I’m so excited to have a single company producing every product and service in my life… from medicine to movies. Fantastic.
Amazon owns Twitch, that hot tub streaming site.
MGM distributed Hot Tub Time Machine
Coincidence? I think not.
You remember the company Buy 'n' Large from Wall-E? Yeah, that's Amazon.
I thought that was WalMart
Yeah so remember that dystopian future ruled by the corporate elite? We’re here baby.
Wish they would spend that money updating interface of prime video...
an online bookstore is buying movie studios…
Imagine time-traveling from 2002 to find this out, then you notice Bezos also has his own space program
Bring back StarGate!
“The Washington Post RAVES about newest Bond film....”
INT. NIGHT. CASINO ROYALE.
The Poker table is thrumming with activity. Every seat is taken and a large crowd has gathered to watch as BOND and LECHIFFRE battle it out.
The tension is palpable as the two men evaluate each other. BOND’s chiselled features give nothing away but beads of sweat stain his crisp, white collar. LECHIFFRE is inscrutable, peering over a large pile of casino chips, like a predator guarding its kill. He makes a bet, pushing stacks of chips forward with both hands. It is more than BOND can cover. The room gasps and BOND swallows noticeably.
LECHIFFRE’s mask breaks and he allows himself a smile.
As BOND considers his next move, he notices blood form in the tear-duct of his opponent. It is deftly dabbed away but the tell has been given.
Quickly, BOND removes his watch, cuff links and car keys and throws them down on the table, along with all his remaining chips.
CROUPIER (to Bond): Monsieur?
The watch illuminates.
ALEXA: Calling Midge Ure.
The Casino erupts into pandemonium.
Imagine a megacorp so big, it yawns and a hundred year old monumental institution just falls in its mouth.
Just another weapon in the AMAZON EMPIRE, suddenly I’m reminded of how everyone thought Disney would take over the world in the future. I’d be more worried about Amazon.
Alexa, play it’s the end of the world!
Prepare yourselves for the James Bond cinematic universe and a new spinoff series about Q's home life.
Nothing can be sacred anymore
Kids are going to know what it's like growing up with three channels again, I guess.
This mean we get bond on prime?
Just give me more Stargate stuff
Well MGM was good while it lasted. 🤷🏼
The real news should be, Amazon will still charge rentals on MGM movies and TVs still for prime members.
I can't wait to not be able to find Bond movies in Amazon's shitty interface.
I don’t like this one bit
Media is the best way to control public opinion
Maybe we should uh, make Amazon pay taxes.
We are living in a prequel to Wall-e aren't we..
Would you like to buy Coca Cola with that?
Just let someone untangle the Goldeneye rights so we can have a good digital remaster of it widely available
GOT DAMN 😳
