Ring of mushrooms in my backyard
By - randomstranger76
The fairies have chosen your firepit as their new home. Sorry for your loss.
I was going to say it was a fairy ring as well!! My grandmother would get one every spring in her yard. She'd have us put out old Barbie furniture & things for the fairies to "have a place to rest". We'd also put out crackers, bread, or cookies, so the fairies could eat. I remember one time we had set everything up & went back in the house. We had to, otherwise the fairies wouldn't come to the ring. My younger sister snuck out to try & sneak up on the fairies, & started crying, because the birds & a squirrel were eating the food. She was convinced they had eaten the fairies as well, & wouldn't help set up the fairy rings ever again.
Is it wrong that I laughed at this
Nope. It's kind of a family joke at this point. I actually screenshot the picture to my sister saying "Not the fairies!! Not the fairies!!" She called me a not so nice name. 😁
The best part of siblings.
Perpetually trolling one another in a wholesome teasing way while fully knowing you’re going to get called a mean name.
We have VERY different siblings.
Not really, I laugh about how long I was convinced that my cat had killed the Easter Bunny by leaving a dead rabbit on the porch on Easter Sunday morning when I was in pre-school.
Your cat knew what it was doing.
Your cat is/was awesome. And I say that as someone that isn’t massively into cats.
Was, KAOS crossed the rainbow bridge in the timeframe between operations Desert Storm and Gothic Serpent (the official name for the operation that the movie Black Hawk Down was based on.)
[Fairy Rings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_ring) for reference.
"hazardous or dangerous" pfft. If I ever had a fairy ring, I'd consider it good luck! I am also owned by a pair of black cats, so there's that.
Witch!!! Burn her!!!
Careful . . .I'll turn you into a newt.
You'll "newt-er" 'em, as it were. 🤣
Thank you, i'm here all week.
In Dutch they're called heksenkringen, "Witches' Rings".
The reference to witches makes them sound more ominous. :)
Thank you I had no frickin clue what these guys were talkin about
Last Time I saw these I was walking past a cemetery with my friends. I told them that this is where the death fairies live
All of My subjects are death faeries.
Don't you have other jobs for them? Like who cleans the kitchen?
Me: Immortal fae nobility.
You: Filthy mortal who should be careful how he addresses Me.
The kitchen: It's a magical mystical faerie kitchen, it literally cannot get dirty.
(Sorry for being rude, it's not personal it's just a dumb joke I did because I don't want to actually think of an in character answer.)
Sorry your highness, I'm not too good with immortal nobility standards. Last time I talked to a dragon I got chased out of his den because I asked him to give me some fire so I can light up my blunt
(And no problem, I'm not taking it personal :D)
yup, you got a fairy infestation. You can trap'm or poison'em.
Set it alight, see what fried Tinkerbell tastes like
Get your dramen staff
They should probably do the Elite Lumbridge tasks, a lot more convenient.
Went looking for osrs, wasnt disappointed :)
Lol I came here looking for the RS comment.
Get that lunar upgrade ;)
If playing years of Zelda has taught me anything it's that you need to dig in the center of that
Find the nearby rock and place it on top of the empty space
Was thinking he should play Zelda's Lullaby
That’s the fae’s firepit now
Looks like cold iron. Not sure the fae would want/use that.
We've had ways to deal with iron for at *least* fifteen hundred years.
Username checks out
Thank you! I feel like I sort of bashed the joke over the head a little bit in this post...
Probably why they built the ring. It's a safety barrier.
Get a few close ups, and they'll love you at r/mushroomporn
Lol, love the variety of subreddits there are
If it looks appealing, there is probably a r/ blahblah *porn* for it
Fungus is good for your soil! They're the little engineers that help condition the soil and break down nutrients. When they form in a ring like this, it's because the fungal network began growing somewhere near the center and is fruiting near the edges. Fungus is neat!
It also makes the ground softer to walk on, it feels really nice imo
The thought of walking into a fairy ring makes my skin prickle. TIL deep down I'm really superstitious.
It's probably just the spores. Maybe better if it's a superstition...
No, you're right to steer clear. The faerie circle is a sign that we have claimed the ground inside the circle, and until the circle dies away any mortal who trespasses is fair game. You don't even have to accept food or a gift if you've entered a circle uninvited.
And if you get nine years bad luck, or lose your firstborn, or get genital warts or whatever, don't try appealing to Me. You should have stayed off My fucking lawn.
I can't believe I'm going to say this. User name checks out.
If it’s good for the soil why does it leave a ring in our grass that never grows back? It’s been years for us and we just have a ring of dirt incapable of growing anything
The mycelium absorbs the nutrients. That's actually one big organism right there; the mushrooms are just its fruit.
Not all fungus that causes fairy rings are beneficial to soil. The fungus needs to eat too, and sometimes it strips the soil of nutrients, so the plants above also "starve" and die.
Sounds like you unfortunately have/had the bad fungus instead of the good fungus.
That's interesting! Is that any kind of field fungus? I have a few hats growing in my zucchini bed and am not sure if the zucchini likes them or not. Any advice is highly appreciated.
There are pathogenic plant fungi but they generally live on or in the plant and send their fruits up directly from it (or form powdery coatings as plant mildews do). If you're just seeing regular old mushrooms in your garden and the plants aren't dead, that's a sign the soil is healthy and living.
Edit: Unless your plants require fast draining soil, in which case it's a sign there's too much moisture.
Thank you very much for your explanation! This really helps and I'll check the drainage just to be sure.
Any reason it makes a perfect circle?
Because nature likes math? Or is math, I should say.
So, the organism at work here is not *just* the mushrooms you see. It's an underground network of mycelium, and the mushrooms are bits that it occasionally sprouts. It starts as a little baby fungus and grows out more or less equally in all directions. Eventually conditions are right and the entire outer edge of the fungus starts sending up mushrooms. Because it grew out from a center point, the mushrooms end up in a circle.
Old tree roots
I'd imagine the ash/debris from the fire pit is good for growth as well no?
It's my understanding that's a single mycelium and it grows outward and under the certain condition it will begin to fruit mushrooms. So that is a single organism.
*places rock* “YAHAHA! YOU FOUND ME”
Fairy Ring! 🧚♂️
Encircled where you perform witchcraft
That’s what I was thinking..ritualistic sacrifices to their god “Mario.”
Mark the extent of the circle. If it comes back again, see if it's getting bigger.
Chairs around fire pit maybe?
It's a faerie circle! Turns out they just do that sometimes
Your bbq is trying to teleport
Fairy ring code: b b q
Thats great lol
What you missed was the earlier Great Mushroom funeral pyre.
superstitious people be like “good luck bruh”
Fairy ring. Tis good luck they bring, bygosh 'n bygorin. Just nah dance inside naked by the light of the full moon. Very bad.
Try inputting D-K-R in the middle of that ring and see what it does.
Thats a fae circle be careful
Nah it's fine. Just go in there and do whatever you want. Be sure to accept any food or drink you're offered while you're there, that never causes problems.
Don’t step inside
this is exactly where the dog drags its butt to clean itself.
Beware fairy abductions!
They will work for pizza, though.
It is true. In fact the majority of pizza delivery drivers are actually My subjects. Please tip them well.
We’ll definitely if it’s from the Za-lord!
anyone who calls that something besides a fairy circle is wrong
Went on a mushroom foraging trip in Spain. There, they call this the witch’s circle.
Septic tank.... Diy mushroom fertilizer!
That fire pit is theirs now
I don't know if it's just my family or if other people do it too but we call those fairy dances or witch rings, and when you think about it, that's just your lawn having ringworm
In old Celtic culture a faerie circle is created by dancing faeries and your not supposed to step inside one. Faeries is a word derived from the gaelic “fear shidhe,” which means “man of the shee.”
Faeries are considered to be evil and mischievous creatures unlike the fairy more commonly portrayed in modern popular culture. Faeries are supernatural spirits that know easy ways to steal. Faeries steal children and keep them as slaves or pets.
That's neat, in Nordic stories at least as far as I've heard they are more neutral forest spirits.
I could see those old myths coming over with Nordic people and the locals just giving it a more suspicious back story. There is a lot of crossover in culture and language. I used to date a Swedish girl and was surprised at all the similarities. If I said something like "that's a braw broon coo" she knew exactly what I was saying.
I'm Swedish and it could be because I don't know the pronunciation of those words but I have no idea what that means
Bra brun ko. In Scots it's basically the same pronunciation.
OoOh, now I wonder why you would ever have to say that very specific sentence?
These lies about Me and My subjects have been spread by the enemies of the Fae, and I will not stand by and hear them repeated! Retract your accusations, mortal, or I will turn your toenails into biting midges and your eyelids into snails. Your feet will always be cold and every chair you sit on will feel like a spike of heated iron. Also probably genital warts.
The fae have claimed your firepit. My condolences for your loss.
it's called a fairy ring
In Sweden (and probably other places) it's called a Hex ring
Reminds me on Wandavision her field is call the Hex
That's a fairy circle, You're going to have give them offerings or they'll steal you blind
It's because people have been repeatedly sitting in a ring around the fire pit killing the grass beneath them. And that's basically what mycelium eats. Dead plant material among other stuff depending of fungi species
Your safe from the goblins now
I read before it’s something to do with how spores were dispersed uniformly from a previous mushroom in the area.
What's the best way to keep grass from growing into landscaping rocks
Mushrooms around a campfire... Ohhh, the memories
To think you’d be likely burned at the stake for this a few hundred years ago
The mycelium resistance 2: electric boogaloo
It's a portal to the Fae wilds!!
Check if it is *Calocybe gambosa*. Where I live they grow this time of year in rings just like this. They are a tasty little treat!
That fire pit is cursed
Rond de mousserons
Sorry to say, your garden i full of body parts
There might be a well underneath it. In the well might be a bag with a rock and a strange hand out of threads.
That's a faery circle
Time to list and sell the house before the summoning ritual is complete 🤔😱
Oh. That's a cool Faerie Ring. You should probably sit in there and meditate or do yoga or whatever for a bit. If you're unhappy then follow whoever appears to you.
That's how it starts.
Frogs have been using your yard for their late night cult meetings.
Run now, while there's still time!
were u gifted a Korok Seed ?
Pee in it
E.T. parked his ride in your yard for a minute to go get some Reeses Peices.
Thats where people fart while sitting around the fire
Fill in a pond?
Spiderwick Chronicles anyone?
You could take that out with a bottle of immunox if you need a solution
Dance in it all you want untill it's complete.
Oh god don’t fall asleep inside of that or you’re not coming back
That was a good sized tree
Well if you have your Dramen staff, that’s a quick teleport to Zanaris!
I remember fairy rings from a book I read as a kid called "Summer of the Monkeys".
[Don’t forget to save. ](https://youtu.be/pYpN8Uii6ng)
Thanks for this. Had to scroll down way too far. Feeling old now.
Chevron 7 has locked in place
Whatever you do, do NOT step in it.
How much for an ounce?
There's a korok seed there
A gnome’s ritual ground
You better leave some bread and cream out...
You must be a real fun-gi
if Zelda has taught me anything start digging in the middle
Someone's trying to start a cult in your backyard. Time to move halfway across the world now.
You have to dig yo. I guarantee there's treasure or immeasurable power
There’s a Korok under that fire pit.
Ah I recognize this clue location. You need to go 4 paces north, 6 west, 3 south and then dig. Beware the zammy wizard though.
The Gentry are inviting you to a barbecue. Decline, but do so extremely politely.
Anyone check for a body? Fungus likes to grow around decomposing corpses 🤓😅
It’s a portal. Be careful.
the frogs have chosen your fire pit out of millions, you should be thankful
There was a tree at the center of that ring at one point. The leftover root structure is what the fungus is feeding off of.
Tell me if the fairies are wearing boots or not.
Theres a Korak seed in there
Def a Korok there.
Nice fairy ring.
Don’t fuck with a fairy circle. Thank me later.
There'll be a chest you can dig with a spade. But only of you're Chicken Chaser.
Fungi have come up from a cave ten feet down through the cracks at the edge of the subsidence slump.
Death caps. If the name isn't obvious enough, they're poisonous so don't eat
IIRC, that's the outside edge of a pretty good sized fungus you got there. Congratulations.
for anyone wondering: "fairy rings" like this can be caused by the root systems of dead trees decaying over time. they start in the center, and as their food source is consumed they grow outwards radially, with ones in the center withering away as they run out of nutrients. personally, i think the cultural phenomenon is just as interesting as the scientific explanation though ;)
I thought it was because the spores of the original toadstool dropped in a circle around itself and made new toadstools
i think that would depend on the species, and you are correct that the spores don't generally get very far, but as other comments detail, the mushrooms are just the fruiting body, or the flower of the organism. there is a network of mycelium and sometimes a core underground which make up the majority of the biomass. you could imagine the whole thing as sort of a cone sprouting from an underground lump called the truffle.
Don’t go in it.
Why not? I can never find anything online about the supernatural aspect of fairy rings.
Faerie rings can be many things - a sacred space, a gathering place, a portal/doorway... General rule of thumb with the fae is to leave well alone.
Is there something buried under the ground there?
Drip line from an old tree...
That’s how those mushrooms grow. The actual organism is a network of mycelium (root like structures) under the soil. The mushrooms are the fruiting body of the mycelium. To expand the mycelium, they grow up at the edge of the circle and drop spores further out.
Or the outline of the septic tank. Being a realist can be a bummer.
Stepped in one of those rings before. The last 6 years have been hell. Bless your soul
I didn't approve this installation! Someone's head is going to roll.
