That was after brock was poisoned. I just rewatched this episode, and walt was talking to brock about how brock was recently in the hospital and how brave he was, and brock kept giving walt the stink eye in this scene. I don’t think we knew why brock was giving walt the stink eye at the time, but he sure didn’t like walt.
No worries, it’s hard to keep track of all this! The other day, I couldn’t remember how victor died lol!
I remembered this scene because I was also still lost on how walt poisoned brock. All the foreshadowing gets a little clearer on rewatch.
Pretty sure Walt went to look for Jesse before Brock got poisoned. He might have seen him after too, but I haven't seen that scene yet. I am watching the series for the first time and just finished the episode where it pans to the lily of the valley after Walt leaves and Walt hasnt seen Brock (yet) after he left the hospital. He has seen Jesse, Brock and Andrea before it happened, Jesse pushed him out and told him to leave him alone. Later Jesse confronts Walt about Brock explaining it's the kid he saw recently when he came to see him.
Well it turns out I was wrong. Walt did inject it into a juice box but he gave it to Saul and Saul gave it to one of the Vietnamese salon workers kids and the kid gave it to Brock at lunch.
I wondered this too. I can only assume it was when Walt went to her house and was frantically “trying to get a hold of Jesse” which we know is BS. I guess he did it then but I don’t remember him giving anything to Brock.
In the show Walt is an expert chemist. So we can accept that he would be able to extract an exact amount of poison from the plant.
He is not a paediatrician or pharmacist. He has no experience with administering medicines or poisons, so judging what dose of poison would make Brock sick but not kill him was guesswork.
We know that Walt was not certain Brock would survive, because we saw he was relieved when Jesse told him that Brock would recover. He gambled with Brock's life, hoping that he had got it right, but what he did carried a real risk of killing the kid.
I think that might be about right, but whether or not the kid lived or died didn't matter, cause all that mattered to Walt was that Jessie thought gus did it either way
Yeah but life isn’t black and white. Walt was certainly evil but he wouldn’t kill a kid when it could be avoidable. You can see the he feels remorse after killing Mike
That was probably from one of the few shreds of humanity he had left. I don’t think he really went full sociopath, but he was going down the path of antisocial personality disorder due to the cancer and all he had been through. However if he didn’t have cancer but just snapped I think he probably of become so hardened that he would of been full blown, but it’s also more doubtful that if it wasn’t for the cancer he would of ever snapped at least not to he extent he did.
as a long time drug addict I can tell you with absolute certainty, a gifted chemist can synthesize just about any drug you can think of(with the right equipment of course), and when you have the kind of brains for that, making a poison and getting the right dose would be child's play, I know of people who have synthesized Quaaludes and used them
To add to this, Walter didn’t have to synthesize the poison directly. That would be infeasible—the active compounds in Lily of the Valley are natural products, which are notoriously difficult to synthesize. He only needed to extract them, since he could access the plant, which is comparatively quick
I’m still so confused. Did walt use the Ricin or the Lily of the Valley? Walt had the ricin to poison Lydia with, and the Lily of the Valley was seen on Walt’s backyard table - also what Jesse said the doctor’s claimed is what Brock ate. So when Jesse realized the ricin had been lifted from him by Huell he assumes Walt poisoned Brock with ricin???
He realised that Walt, through Saul, was the reason the ricin cigarette went missing and that’s enough to connect the dots that Walt had something to do with Brock’s poisoning
Walt used Lily of the Valley. They had to take the ricin from for two reasons. First was to make him think someone took it and possibly gave it to Brock. Second, was to make sure Jesse didn’t use it on Walt.
All Jesse knows is that Huell was the one that took the ricin. I don’t think he believes they used it on Brock because he would 100% be dead. Jesse realizes Walt took the ricin so therefore Walt poisoned Brock.
Or he was acting relieved because Jesse was right in his face? And if he really didnt know the amount he needed which is incredibly unlikely perhaps he did some simple research? You people just love reaching for excuses to hate him lmao, Walt is a morally grey and multifaceted character, he is supposed to be questioned and at times even sympathized with. There is no need to signal your disapproval of him
Walt took reasonable caution to make sure Brock doesn't die but since he isn't a doctor there was certainly an element of risk that he was willing to take.
Now the real question is how much was that risk? We will never know the definitive answer to it. Walt certainly needed Brock to live long enough for Jesse to turn on Gus and help execute the plan. If Brock dies, Jesse probably collapses for a bit and wouldn't be in game mode. Jesse's behaviour could get unpredictable on Brock dying. Walt wouldn't have wanted that.
People say Walt look relived when Jesse told him Brock was going to be okay, what else was he supposed to do? He put on an act for Jesse.
Normally I wouldn’t believe him but it was the heat of the moment. I don’t think he could have thought of a lie like that while someone was threatening his families future.
Lily of the valley is only _potentially_ fatal after a certain amount of berries/flowers are ingested. Why would Walt purposely give Brock a lethal dose? The dude is a chemist, if he wanted Brock to die then he’d be dead.
nah i don’t think walter *wanted* brock to die, but if ur giving something to a kid that could potentially kill them, esp if ur as cold and calculating as walt, then u have accepted and okay with the fact that u could kill the kid
I mean S1E2 he does give a lesson in class about chirality in chemistry and it’s relation to medicine. I honestly don’t know though, and I’m definitely no expert.
There’s no way Walt could’ve known he wouldn’t kill Brock, he gave him enough to be in the ICU and have doctors and federal agents think it was a deadlier poison. He definitely risked killing Brock
Walt was a chemist and would understand toxins and the toxicity of lily of the valley; Being in ICU doesn't mean you are going to die; the doctors didn't know what the poison was; the feds were reacting to Jesse saying it was ricin. but apart from those points you are 100% right.
>Walt was a chemist and would understand toxins and the toxicity of ricin
Except it wasn't ricin and it was a random plant Walter had basically no info about and no info about the victim, if he wanted to measure the amount he couldn't know Brock weight or his age or anything in particular except that he was beloved by Jesse.
If the "ricin" killed Brock Jesse would be so blind by the rage against Gus that it would have played perfectly for Walter
I don’t believe that it was either stated or implied that Walt used Lily of the Valley randomly. In fact, knowing his educational background, I think it’s more likely that Walt knew what he was doing. However, I do agree that if Brock proved especially sensitive to that particular plant’s toxin(s) and suffered horrible pain or died, it did play into Walt’s plan to pit Jesse against Gus.
I’m now trying to picture Walt sitting there and just being like “you know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna feed a kid a random plant today.”
Season 5 Walt: “you don’t think I knew exactly how many begonias to give him??!”
I think Walt didn't use ricin on the off chance jessie would suggest that it was causing the problem you know to prevent the legal trouble jessie almost got himself in
Walt knew lily of The Valley would have similar effects as ricin and he wanted Jesse to think it was ricin, he knew Jesse would suspect it and report it as ricin because of the cigarette…. I swear Walt haters didn’t watch the same show I did… Walt knew Jesse would connect the lost cigarette to the ricin and either suspect Walt or Gus. Walt gambled and it payed off… if he wanted Brock to die he’d kill him but it wouldn’t have helped at all. Walt knew the right dose and made sure he’d be okay. He says this in season 5 I think. Walt sucks but he’s not pure evil
When he says "i knew how much to give him" that was pure BS, it was just to save his pride and made him look like the good guy who saved Jesse. I mean biology is not even his field of knowledge
>He’s genuinely relieved when he finds out Brock is gonna pull through.
He was faking it. He wiped his fake tears when jesse left (the same way he did when he faked crying in front of hank)
No he told Andrea to tell the doctors it might be that. And the agents told Jesse “the doctors are starting to think you might be right” Brock was in the intensive care unit and doctors started thinking he’d been poisoned with ricin, it’s ridiculous to think Walt could’ve known he would turn out fine
My point is he gave enough of a poison (regardless of what kind) for him to be in the ICU and multiple people suspect it’s a very deadly poison. Brock definitely could’ve died
Maybe.
Regarding others suspecting Brock was poisoned by a “very deadly poison” than it is:
1. doesn’t make it so;
2. means that Lily of the Valley is less dangerous than ricin, meaning that the parameters for use as a faux toxin, if you will, might be fairly broad; and,
3. if Walt accidentally kills Brock, which might be highly unlikely, it still dovetails with his plan to divide Jesse and Gus.
You can eat Lily of the Valley and not die. If you ingest too much than yes it can be fatal but Walt probably had it calculated out so that it most likely wouldn't be. Plus he was counting on Jesse finding out Brock was poisoned which meant Brock would end up in the hospital where someone would figure out what he'd ingested. And now I'm imagining this case ending up on House's desk. Kid comes in with these symptoms and then later someone says he ingested ricin leading the team down all sorts of crazy rabbit holes until they finally diagnose him with Lily of the Valley poisoning and fix him right up
I'm sure that he considered the possibility that the kid could die. No matter how careful he might have been, it's poison. He knows nothing of that kid's medical history.
When Walt is driving to where he buried his money, he’s on the phone with Jesse and Jesse brought up the fact that Walt poisoned Brock. Walt said something alone the lines of “Don’t you think I knew exactly how much to give him?”
Walt admits the poisoning was calculated when he was trying to get Jesse back on his side after he found out about the whole plot. Walt says that he gave Brock enough so that he would be hospitalized, but not enough to kill him, he just needed Jesse to buy into his story and help him to kill Gus.
Chemists working in toxicology use a relatively straightforward target specific toxicity calculation called the oral reference dose. He would probably know this and understand the dose dependent response.
Yeah but I think here he’s telling the truth. A huge component to measuring dosages for various substances or drugs involves chemistry. And a lot of other things he said during that argument were true so I tend to believe he wasn’t trying to kill him. Now, if Brock had died he probably wouldn’t care, but I think he at least attempted to calculate how much to give him.
The fact that people are arguing about this makes me give up on humanity. If Walt wanted Brock dead, he would've used the ricin. Why tf would he use lily of the valley then? Walt didn't want Brock dead, end of story. I wonder how many people even watched the show properly
It’s not that Walt wanted Brock dead, the issue is if he knew he would only harm Brock, and not kill him
Walt could have just gotten like a liter of the Lily of the Valley poison, and threw in Brock’s juice, and let him die, but he didn’t cause he didn’t want Brock to die
The question is did Walt Calculate out the exact amount of poison he could give, to where he would harm Brock without killing him, or did he just throw a random amount in and hope for the best, accepting the possibility he could have killed Brock
>or did he just throw a random amount in and hope for the best
If he did then why not just use the ricin... Walt is a master chemist and the smartest character in the bb universe. If Walter White says you live, you live
Walter wanted to convince Jessie that Gus “killed” Brock
If he used Ricin, it would either connect back to him since he knows how to make it, or it would make Jessie think it came from the fake cigarette
It had to be Lily of the Valley in order to make it believable that Gus did it
You're fucking stupid
1. The whole reason Jesse believed Walt was because he thought Tyrus lifted the cigarette out of his pocket, Walt did not make a new ricin cigarette, he used Heull to take the one Jesse had
2. Jesse thought it was the ricin when he went after Gus. It was AFTER discovering it was in fact the lily of the valley when he realised it wasn't Gus that poisoned him
>You’re fucking stupid
And you’re Dick riding the hell out of Walter right now
And you’re right, Jessie did think it was ricen when he went after Gus. However that doesn’t change the the fact that he used Lily of the Valley as to not be suspicious
The Lily of the Valley was so Walter had plausible deniability, not so he could ensure he didn’t kill Brock
>The Lily of the Valley was so Walter had plausible deniability
I like how you don't even provide reasonings for your claim because you know you're wrong. Your original comment is literally all wrong and after I proved you wrong how l like "oh but it doesn't change the fact that.." without providing actual reasoning because you fail to think of any. I am struggling to see how someone can be this stupid and unable to accept that they got something wrong
You feel strong? You feel good “winning” a Reddit argument? You want be to just say “sure, you win” as you go back to cock riding Walter White?
It’s Reddit. Get over yourself
Biggest sign of an unintelligent person is that they rely on going on Reddit and insulting people just to bait responses so they can feel like they did something
Walt didn’t use the ricin on Brock. If he did, it would have killed him. Instead, he used a berries from that plant called Lily of the Valley. The berries had similar poison to the ricin, except it wasn’t that lethal. Walt knew that if he used the right amount of it, Brock would only be sick and would eventually recover. So when he sighed of relief when Jesse told him that Brock was gonna pull through, that was a genuine reaction. He never intended to kill him, he just needed a way to turn Jesse against Gus and help him kill him.
To make that a lot easier for them to understand, especially if they're not a native English speaker:
Venom is what's injected by creatures - such as a snake's bite or a scorpion's sting.
Poison is what the victim ingest/consumes themselves, eg poisonous berries or a toad's poisonous skin.
I think the best description is that Walt was reasonably confident Brock wouldn't die.
I have watched this episode several times and still can't figure out when/how Walt administered Lily of the Valley to Brock.
Apparently he put it in Brocks food at lunch.
Where did we learn this?
If you look very closely, you can see Saul shredding documents. They include lunch schedules for Brock's school.
Not Saul. It’s honeytits. And it wasn’t schedules either. That theory is debunked.
is this real or did you just make it up
You got a clip?
Remember he went to Andreas place to "find jesse"? He must have done it then. Then don't show him doing it but yeah.
Oh maybe i messed up the timeline then, my bad
No worries, it’s hard to keep track of all this! The other day, I couldn’t remember how victor died lol! I remembered this scene because I was also still lost on how walt poisoned brock. All the foreshadowing gets a little clearer on rewatch.
Victor swallowed a piece of aluminum when he was demonstrating the meth cook. Gus saw this, and promptly attempted to help remove the aluminum.
From his throat
Pretty sure Walt went to look for Jesse before Brock got poisoned. He might have seen him after too, but I haven't seen that scene yet. I am watching the series for the first time and just finished the episode where it pans to the lily of the valley after Walt leaves and Walt hasnt seen Brock (yet) after he left the hospital. He has seen Jesse, Brock and Andrea before it happened, Jesse pushed him out and told him to leave him alone. Later Jesse confronts Walt about Brock explaining it's the kid he saw recently when he came to see him.
Vince Gilligan said that off camera Walt injected the lily of the valley into a juice box and then showed up at Brocks school and gave it to him.
That’s… odd.
Well it turns out I was wrong. Walt did inject it into a juice box but he gave it to Saul and Saul gave it to one of the Vietnamese salon workers kids and the kid gave it to Brock at lunch.
How would he give it to brock? He isn’t a parent or guardian so he wouldn’t be allowed to right??
Idk he’s a smart guy
did he now
I wondered this too. I can only assume it was when Walt went to her house and was frantically “trying to get a hold of Jesse” which we know is BS. I guess he did it then but I don’t remember him giving anything to Brock.
Wrong season bro
Shit, then I def have no idea haha
*absolutely confident and perhaps indifferent

I think it mattered somewhat to him, he isn’t a total psychopath. It just mattered more that he got Jesse on his side
Nah but he became a sociopath by the end lol and I would say poisoning a kid is pretty sociopathic.
Yeah but life isn’t black and white. Walt was certainly evil but he wouldn’t kill a kid when it could be avoidable. You can see the he feels remorse after killing Mike
That was probably from one of the few shreds of humanity he had left. He wasn’t a bomb maker or a meth cook or a murder either but he makes do.
No one is a murderer, a meth cook or a bomb maker until they commit the crime lol Walter wasn’t in the profession of pharmacy, it’s kinda different
as a long time drug addict I can tell you with absolute certainty, a gifted chemist can synthesize just about any drug you can think of(with the right equipment of course), and when you have the kind of brains for that, making a poison and getting the right dose would be child's play, I know of people who have synthesized Quaaludes and used them

Fair enough
The point is he’s so smart he can do whatever he wants
why didn't he build a time machine wtf Jimmy was right
He talks about it in BCS so it’s in the realm of possibility
I’m still so confused. Did walt use the Ricin or the Lily of the Valley? Well he knew the ricin hadn't been used because it showed up later. He probably pieced together that Walt planted it later on.
I thought he was acting like he was relieved.
Or he was acting relieved because Jesse was right in his face? And if he really didnt know the amount he needed which is incredibly unlikely perhaps he did some simple research? Normally I wouldn’t believe him but it was the heat of the moment. I don’t think he could have thought of a lie like that while someone was threatening his families future.
Jesus Christ, it’s like people DO NOT watch the show.
So you're just taking Walt's word at face value?
It’s pretty obvious Walt was confident Brock would be fine, doesn’t seem like the kid killing type
if ur poisoning a kid, then ur def the kid-killing type
Lily of the valley is only _potentially_ fatal after a certain amount of berries/flowers are ingested. Why would Walt purposely give Brock a lethal dose? The dude is a chemist, if he wanted Brock to die then he’d be dead.

Yes
Yes, he said it while driving to the desert to save his money
Yes but that was just to gain his trust. It’s very likely he was just lying which he constantly does especially to Jesse.
He put it in that Stevia crap Brock is always putting in his juice box…..
There’s a fun easter egg where Uncle Jack’s ringtone is Brock oh Brock
I mean S1E2 he does give a lesson in class about chirality in chemistry and it’s relation to medicine. I honestly don’t know though, and I’m definitely no expert.
Outchicaneried by the main sub again
Walt used just enough poison to make Brock sick, but not kill him. its part of his plan.

Walt: Brock, eat this plant and, ahem, be gone, yeah. (I’ll show myself out.)
If Walt wanted Brock to die he’d just use ricin
If he used the ricin the feds would have fucked Jesse in the ass, they were already when it was suspected ricin Imagine if it actually was
Are you stupid? Walt poisoned Brock before Jesse got arrested
I think Walt didn't use ricin on the off chance jessie would suggest that it was causing the problem you know to prevent the legal trouble jessie almost got himself in
Walt knew lily of The Valley would have similar effects as ricin and he wanted Jesse to think it was ricin, he knew Jesse would suspect it and report it as ricin because of the cigarette…. the police only let him off because it *wasn't* ricin
Well Saul probably did tell him Brock's age, but yeah it was a pretty risky plan altogether.
Even though it's scientifically inaccurate, canonically walt knows exactly what he was doing.
Nah. Walt wasn’t sure. He was willing to take the risk. He’s genuinely relieved when he finds out Brock is gonna pull through.
>He’s genuinely relieved when he finds out Brock is gonna pull through. He was faking it. He wiped his fake tears when jesse left (the same way he did when he faked crying in front of hank)
He didn’t wipe fake tears. He wasn’t even crying. He does cover his eyes for a moment once Jesse leaves because he‘s emotional
Based flair
More like self awareness + humor It pissed some people off
Walt did noting wrong
Eh not really
Besides janes all the people he killed were killers and drug dealers like him
>Besides janes So you already admit he did something wrong. Or you think killing Jane was justified?
he only choose not to save her, not to kill her
Bring on the caveats.
+1
Ok Bob Dylan from blonde on blonde
Federal agents tought this because jesse being jesse told The feds to search about that poison

They didn’t know what it was until Jesse mentions ricin. It’s only after this that the federal agents and doctors are looking for poison.
It’s been a while but I think Walt put just enough poison so it would hospitalize him but not kill him

he tells jessie this in voicemail saying dont you think i would know exactly how much to give that boy and he needed him on his side.
I mean, Walt tought that jesse was about to burn the work of an entire life so it makes sense for him to lye about this to calm down Jesse
I think Walt did at least try to calculate the dosage, but was also ready to accept the fallout if he had accidentally killed Brock instead
Science
It’s either Lily’s Valley or Rice N’ Beans…choose your poison
Absolutely. I just finished watching the series for the 2nd time last night. I just can't feel any sympathy for Walt just a bad bad person.
It's plan not planned
On the drive out to his barrels of money while calling Jesse, he says that he knew exactly how much to give him
i can't even begin to count the amount of lies he's told Jesse to manipulate him
Yeah but I think here he’s telling the truth.
Maybe he was just liying in order to calm him down

You're fucking stupid 1. The whole reason Jesse believed Walt was because he thought Tyrus lifted the cigarette out of his pocket, Walt did not make a new ricin cigarette, he used Heull to take the one Jesse had 2. Jesse thought it was the ricin when he went after Gus. It was AFTER discovering it was in fact the lily of the valley when he realised it wasn't Gus that poisoned him
>You’re fucking stupid And you’re Dick riding the hell out of Walter right now And you’re right, Jessie did think it was ricen when he went after Gus. However that doesn’t change the the fact that he used Lily of the Valley as to not be suspicious The Lily of the Valley was so Walter had plausible deniability, not so he could ensure he didn’t kill Brock
>The Lily of the Valley was so Walter had plausible deniability I like how you don't even provide reasonings for your claim because you know you're wrong.
Biggest sign of an unintelligent person: Refusing to change their mind even after learning new information
Biggest sign of an unintelligent person is that they rely on going on Reddit and insulting people just to bait responses so they can feel like they did something

Maybe he used lily to make it more plausible in front of the police?
The whole point of using ricin is that it looks like a casual death not planned murder
A death has to be caused by something, you cant just randomly die
Let me rephrase it then The whole point of using ricin is that it looks like a death from a serious flu not planned murder
Even in Star Wars they’ll at least say you died from sadness
It says online Walt put it in his drink but off screen.
What does "it says online" mean? Where online? That could mean anything. We're all saying things online right now.
I'm a casual drug user without sophisticated lab equipment and I can calculate doses that won't kill me. Walt knew exactly what he was doing

Yes it is pretty obvious. Anyone who denies just wants a reason to hate Walt
Tell me you ‘watched’ the show while on your phone without telling me you watched the show while on your phone
He never intended to kill him, he just needed a way to turn Jesse against Gus and help him kill him.
venom is a chemical generated by animals and insects for self-defense and is inflicted in the victim via injection
To make that a lot easier for them to understand, especially if they're not a native English speaker: Venom is what's injected by creatures - such as a snake's bite or a scorpion's sting. Poison is what the victim ingest/consumes themselves, eg poisonous berries or a toad's poisonous skin.
It’s one of the BB sites.
I think he approximated how much he needed. But tbh it really wouldn't matter at that point.
Walter is a genius. He knew.
I also have same question after just finishing season 4.
It was Lilly of the valley and he was pretty sure the kid wouldn’t die
*pretty sure* lol
Walter Blanco from Metástas. He was behind all of it.
