That time I went on a no doors helicopter ride above the city
By - Phat_Irish
Thanks for checking in on my office building. It's good to know it's still standing.
Did you find Jane Swift while you were up there?
Wow that's a deep cut.
You're the second person to comment like this. Is it really? It was a well known stupid thing Swift was doing with state employees and the helicopter.
Seeing as most Redditors here probably weren't born yet when it happened, yeah.
Fair, also what the hell is your username a reference to? What ended after 50 years?
My birthday-Year I created this account.
Ah. Damn you might be the oldest person on this sub.
How'd you go about doing that? How much does it cost? Could be a bucket list item ha
Was almost $300 and was with Hover Boston
Wow that seems like a really reasonable price! Thanks for the reply
Man thats not bad. Sucks I moved away
I just checked and it currently says $750 for a ride and there are 5 occupants max. Which I take to mean, it's up to you how many you bring and therefore how much each person pays. So I could go with 4 friends and we'd only pay $150 each?? That's super enticing
If you have friends
key detail is how long the ride is, could be anywhere from 1 hour to like 15 minutes
Just hasn't been the same since you left
I just checked the Hover Boston site and it says $750 for a 30 minute tour (shortest time available). With tax/fees it’s $800. Did you mean you split the cost with friends or something? Or did they just raise the price?
Take a look into [East Coast Aero Club](http://eastcoastaeroclub.com/helicopters/bedford_tours-special-flights/). I'm biased because I used to work there, but it's a really well-run operation with decently fair prices.
Awesome, thanks for the suggestion. Since you used to work there I’ll ask, do you know if they let you keep the doors open for the downtown Boston tour? Not sure if that’s a standard thing but the other company made it seem like a big deal…
I'm almost positive you can request it, cause I definitely saw the helicopter doors in the office many times while they were out flying. I was on the airplane side of things, but if you call the front desk and ask, they can give you a more direct answer.
Makes sense. Thanks
It's not a big deal. Any provider will typically allow this. I myself have done it many times as have a few friends.
Thanks I'll check that one out too
What’s Phil G like in person?
They must have raised their prices, significantly 😳
my guess is that's the price for 3 seats! It's always been about 300$ per person split up. Hopefully once covid passes I'll be able to go for a flight with them.
You can also go with Blue Hill Helicopters out of the Norwood Memorial Airport
Thank you! I'll check that out
Blue hill is the best. Did my training there
Wow. That's pretty strict. Not even "Riders On The Storm"?
What a beautiful shot!
Oh no, child!
Thanks, palms are sweaty now. Mom's spaghetti.
Knees weak, arms are heavy
And my axe!
What type of camera/lens did you use here?
I might’ve barfed..
From what airport did you depart?
I honestly can't remember but somewhere south of the city around a 30ish minute drive
I also took the doors off ride with hover and it was out of Norwood Airport.
Didn't last too long but it was a blast!
Possibly the most fun thing I’ve done in the 15 years I’ve lived here. An incredible experience.
If you went with Hover then you went from Norwood Memorial. The pilot is a great guy and gives awesome tours
Yeah the pilot was a cool dude, had a crazy mustache!
Lmao he's got an even crazier mustache and beard combo now!
Cool. South of the city and offering pleasure flights/charter services was probably Norwood, but maybe Mansfield or something. Looks like a badass flight. If you have some extra cash laying around you should go for your license
Going to take more than just "extra cash laying around," a helicopter license will set you back close to 15k
Haha yeah that was a bit of an understatement. If OP is intimidated by helos or doesn’t quite have the minimum ~$450-$500 per hour (with instructor) to fly rotary wing, they could try fixed wing for a paltry $225 per hour. Unfortunately flying is expensive
Yeah was a lot of fun. Not sure if actually flying the helicopter would be for me though lol.
I mean it sincerely.
Don't you mean "I mean it, Sincerely" ? If you are going around sub-reddits commenting about peoples grammar, you probably need a new hobby, bud...
No, they were correct. They were appreciating the sentence that did not end with a preposition. Their reply was that they were sincere about their initial comment.
Who's cares? I don't...
No I do not believe the comma belongs there.
Find something better to do, troll...
Lol ok bud 👍🏼
Im sorry, this isnt a picture of the Charles form inside a red line train crossing the Mass Ave bridge, its not allowed here.
Damn my bad, I got a few of those too haha
Felt this one
Felt alive taking it!
Hello. I’m not from Boston and was wondering what that building with the green roof below is.
Hi, it’s the Boston Harbor Hotel building
Was a rush alright haha
My wife was on a chopper in NYC for business once.
After they landed, someone pointed out that her door wasn't fully latched.
If your belted in it’s no big deal. Woulda scared the crap out of her. When I took flight lessons my instructor popped the door open on takeoff to gauge my reaction. I continued to fly the plane and we landed and closed the door to continue the lesson.
looks better than that no doors helicopter ride i took in chile...
share some more shots if you got em!
Thanks, yeah I'll probably post another one or two soon.
Summer 2018 judging from the state of One Dalton's construction.
Bingo, August 2018.
Wow! Love this!
Love your photos! Especially the one from that rainy Longfellow shoot. Do you have instagram? Would love to follow
Thanks, I do! I'll message you it.
I used to work there! (International Place)
Every time I think about doing something like this, I think to myself: I would feel really stupid going down in flames just because I wanted a view. Yes, I never leave the house. I'm secretly thrilled with the forced isolation.
Edit: nice pic, OP.
Your title made my feet tingle wtf
I did this about two years ago. Loved it. Sox had an away game so we got to fly over Fenway (I guess that's not allowed when they're playing).
Did you need to go through special identification process, or was it as simple as planning a date with hover boston. I guess what I'm asking is what was the process into getting you into the air?
Just called and book a time slot, simple as that 👍🏼
Tysm, was looking into taking my girlfriend up for her birthday but haven't been able to find much info
How'd you get in without doors
Easier than getting in with doors... You just climb on in, one less step.
Looks pretty flat to me
Hey, I can see my former office from here
Thank you! Appreciate it.
Not sure if it's you or someone else who took it but this is the screensaver of my laptop right now just in landscape
Yepp I took the photo... nice, might not be right resolution taken off here but If you are interested in getting a copy message me
Was it a red heli
Yepp, same one that fly's over the city every day!
Randomly saw it over everett a few days ago, dont usually see it
Beautiful and scary!
This should be pinned, such a great shot showing how big the city actually is
Thank you, but I think Boston is super small lol
Glad you like, thank you!
Doubt that happened, OP😂you’d fly out of the helicopter!! Maybe a drone shot though!
I went on a no doors attached helicopter ride with Hover Boston, google them and check it out. I don’t even own, nor ever used a drone...
Did you forget that seat belts are a thing? 😂
In a helicopter? 🤨 Dunno bout that one.
[Are you really trying to argue that safety belts aren't a thing in helicopters](https://www.google.com/search?q=helicopter+seat+belts&sxsrf=ALeKk03PKeKFo8g8Ufs5pm6DgfuWXr5waA:1617246328316&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwju26aHiNzvAhUDGFkFHeHuDh8Q_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1536&bih=754)
Glad you survived. Did Michelle wu order the mock execution because you didn't support performative woketivism?
Can you not?
