Was picking up some Kala Thai the other night...

Steph__Z

That looks like out of a comic book

davioro

That's what I was thinking. This is a fantastic picture.

tonepoems

Thank you! I'm actually shocked it turned out so well - I'm no pro and this was on my phone.

dahliaukifune

Blade runner vibe if you ask me. Fantastic.

SheeEttin

I was thinking Batman, Ace Chemicals.

smudley929

Bladerunner meets Its A Wonderful Life...

Wonderful_Parsley_77

So Pottersville?

PennyForYourDollar

What kind of phone? Love the camera

tonepoems

I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus - I love it!

LessNumbers

Using night mode and/or any editing afterwards? I have the same phone and feel like mine wouldn't turn out this pretty

tonepoems

Regular mode. It was honestly a fluke that it turned out well - literally just a quick point and click. For editing - in-phone editing with VSCO - straightened / crop the photo, bumped contrast and saturation up, lowered white balance since the light bulb was glaring more. No pre-set filters. Meltycheeeese

Exactly! Great shot.

[deleted]

I was going to say video game but yeah its got that look for sure

[deleted]

I'm thinking Diagon Alley

classicfilmfan

Yup. Either that, or out of a story book.

seeker_313

Exactly! Gives me Watchmen vibes.

bubalusarnee

David Bowie album cover is what you mean eta: Ziggy Stardust

IBuildBikes

For years it was UNION OY TER HOUSE

jbehrer

Last year it was union oyster ho s

chippinganimal

They obviously unplugged the T to plug in the S of course! /S

bkk-bos

Ironic that the OP posts a picture of The Union Oyster House in a reference to picking up near-by Thai food. It happens that the owner of the Oyster House is the Honorary Thai Consul in Boston and the Thai Consulate is just down the alley on the left, on the side of the Oyster House building.

jbehrer

Cool photo - also Kala Thai is my go to for Thai food! It’s so good!

Sad-Ad-6019

Glad Kala Thai is still there. I miss them--should get some takeout next time I'm downtown

tonepoems

Oh they're busy all the time with the take out / delivery! Makes me happy to see it seems like they're doing ok.

saltavenger

Just going to tack onto this comment b/c I realized a week ago that they now deliver to my house (about a mile and a half away, but over a bridge and not considered "downtown"). I used to fall out of their delivery range pre-pandemic. It's worth checking again if you used to be outside the range, it seems like they expanded it.

[deleted]

I used to live in the North End and would often get Kala Thai as a Friday night treat, I’m so happy it’s still there and thriving!

smudley929

Just FYI I don't eat Thai food but anyone I know that does loves Thai Thani in Norwood...

kdonnel7

Why can't city planners design more streets like this?

LeChatBotte

Because it is a nightmare for deliveries AND drunken late-night broken ankles. Have you SEEN someone try to walk down those cobblestones in heels?

Slackman0000

Listen, no one wants to watch my 250+ pound bearded pasty white man ass walk around in heels. :P Although, it does bring up some interesting questions. Could I even do it? What would I wear? How awesome would my calves look?

rollerderbydyke

Learning to drunkenly walk on cobblestones in heels is a vital life skill that simply cannot be taught in a college classroom

MongoJazzy

those are cow paths that became streets....

[deleted]

This used to be most of Boston. These neighborhoods were enclaves mostly for various white ethnics and immigrants, so when City Hall wanted to expand and rebuild, it was easy to say fuck those people and tear down entire neighborhoods, destroying communities and cultures along the way, in order to build bland shitty ugly buildings and highways. The only real vestiges of this old Boston are that area around faneuil hall, and the North end. It's a tale as old as time when it comes to urban planning. The poor, the downtrodden, the minorities, and the immigrants, get swept into the dustbin so that big business can come and develop an area.

davioro

These streets were designed 300 years ago lol. I used to drive Lyft & Uber in the city and it was such a damn nightmare. I wish there was a magic wand that made Boston a grid system.

[deleted]

I really love it the way it is though. Hardmode.

davioro

You're fucked lmao. I do not love it. Too many one-ways for my liking. I enjoy being a passenger

monkeys_pass

Lmao those streets were designed hundreds of years ago. I love the character also, and I wish more of Boston still looked like that, but there are some very good reasons it's not done.

LollyGriff

Thank you for the photo! Weird how warm it makes me feel, when it is of a snowy night.

felicityshaircut

You should make a print!

Salty5674

looks like a scene out of a movie

OHMAMG

Looks a little like Boston's Diagon Alley. Really like it.

scoobyj01

Yowza! I like it.

Stickyfynger

I love this lil nook of Boston

TraumaticAberration

It's Diagon Alley.

nachoismo

amazing.

Adventurous_Editor97

Great photo

msamuelw

Stunning, that broken light puts it all together

[deleted]

This is really fabulous. Someones gonna steal this and sell it. I'm just gonna steal it! Lol.

greymochacat77

Cool photo

mshockwave

If you only look at the upper part it’s pretty cyberpunk

sunnyd311

That's one of my favorite little spots in Boston!

Beantowntommy

What’s this Thai place?

tonepoems

Nice pic! Tho I kinda wish the light wasn’t overlapping the sign like that

chickenlous

oberon

And now there's a folder in my image stash called "Boston." Thanks!
