Treasure Hunt - Any Ideas?
By - bikemoab
Old Ephrames grave is up in cache national forest and that’s probably gonna play into it
Is there anything more than just the bear clue that indicates this to you?
We did a side by side to the bear grave site and a lot of that seems to ring true.
Edit: did this yesterday
The real problem is that the puzzle also implies that the Great Salt Lake is visible from the end.
OR the "Salty Blues" is sweat dripping into your blue eyes!
Interesting, thanks for the insight.
On the KSL site they have a map with a box on it that excludes Logan canyon from the play area - but I didn’t see that on the official treasure hunt site
It is an official clue: https://www.ksl.com/article/50189326/go-on-a-utah-treasure-hunt-for-the-chance-at-winning-10000
KSL released a clue, the furthest north is ogden. See article and clue here: https://www.ksl.com/article/50189326/go-on-a-utah-treasure-hunt-for-the-chance-at-winning-10000
Welp, perhaps another bear made of stone then that I’m unaware of. Good luck to those who take the search upon them
That's not in the search area.
This is the first thing that popped into my head as well. But Ephraims is outside of the search area so no dice.
Is it recurring to little bear river area?
Hadn’t seen this posted here yet. Any of these clues jump out at anyone?
I’m thinking northern Wasatch Front based on the last two lines. I feel like a key clue is the ‘bear made out of stone’. I assume this is in reference to a natural formation somewhere that people attribute to resembling a bear. What are your thoughts?
I think that the bear clue could be fairly abstract. My opinion is that once you've followed each line of the poem, and been lead to a certain spot, you will see a bear made of stone nearby. But if you haven't been lead to that exact spot, you may not see the bear because from a different angle it may just be another rock. Opinions?
A bear made out of stone could be bear canyon
There is a bear in Fantasy Canyon.
Isn’t that in southern Utah? That’s out of the search area.
It's near Vernal, but still out of bounds.
What’s the treasure?
$10k in cash supposedly. The guys who did this also did another one last summer which was $5k and it was legit.
It is legit, I was the winner last year. This year has me stumped! I'm excited for tomorrows clue.
That’s awesome you were the winner last year. That would be amazing if you won again. I didn’t realize the next clue comes out tomorrow. I thought Sunday or Monday.
If you’ve posted on social media they’ll send you it a day early. Comes out on Friday though
Does that include Reddit? Haha. It’s the only ‘social media’ I’m a part of.
Actually I think if you sign up on their website you can get the clues early http://utahtreasurehunts.com/
I did that earlier in the week, but wasn’t sure if social media was still taking precedence over the mailing list. Thanks man. Happy hunting!
Umm props for being a poem wizard! 😂 $10k would be RAD.
My neighbor won the $5k! Someone else had literally walked right by it moments before he found it!
wait a second... neighbor???
Yes, one of my neighbors loves to do treasure hunts and I remember him telling me about this. He posted a video of his hunt on his FB - it was pretty wild!
haha... no I said that because that was me... hi neighbor!
How long was the hike last year to get to the treasure? Was it a pretty easy hike??
No, it was tough. Because of that I think they wanted to make it easier this year. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/LWCcMZ8JA7A
If the bear aspect is more abstract than old ephriam's grave, it sounds a lot like the Living Room hike in the foothills. Epic sunset views, Salt Flats + Salt Lake views.
The emerald tunnel made me think of the arched oaks in Red Butte Garden that that leads to a path along a stream, and you can turn (before the end) up to Living Room. But that is a right turn.
I was thinking that too but they were pretty clear in their video about not having to go on private property.
I honestly had the same thought except for the part about the ‘river, creek, or spring’. Does that fit?
That's what got me too, it's at the mouth of emigration which has a creek but that specific trail itself doesn't.
I don’t think there are and cliffs there though, are there?
No it gets very steep with drastic drop-offs I would call cliffs, sure. Maybe not at the peak but on the hike itself yes.
To add to my own comment, if you start the living room trailhead but eventually go a different pathway, there's a scenic radio tower, "Where the black bird clicks" possibly? I don't know what it's called, I just used to work for NHMU so I'd dick around in the foothills a lot
What organization is doing this? I remember there was an Instagram page a couple years ago but after 2 or 3 hunts I think it died out. Would love to participate!
Edit: found [this](https://www.ksl.com/article/50189326/go-on-a-utah-treasure-hunt-for-the-chance-at-winning-10000) on KSL
It was a sponsored story on KSL today. It’s supposedly just two guys doing it to get people outdoors.
Go on a Utah treasure hunt for the chance at winning $10,000 https://www.ksl.com/article/50189326/go-on-a-utah-treasure-hunt-for-the-chance-at-winning-10000
Huh, kind of surprising. It seems to be based on the Fenn's Gold treasure hunt which became somewhat infamous when a number of people died looking for it. That was about $2m in gold and was found after \~10 years last summer.
Getting outdoors is great, but people need to be careful, the outdoors can still be pretty wild.
Lol just googled it. Thanks!
I'm 3000 miles away, so ill never find this treasure but started playing with google maps.
I sounds like you end up on the east side of the salt lake looking west
Theres a Cherry Campground 'where hikers rest'
There looks to be a creek there and a trail that splits with one called LEFT Fork days canyon trail (turn to port)
This where i get lost. I don't the local area to know what the stone bear is unless its a marker they put in. I did see some hiker pictures of some peaks that likely have local names.
But if you go south from where there trail goes north, you find a meandering trail to an interesting rock formation that i can convince myself looks like a bear (gps 40.154801,-111.444899) with some cliffs around.
Good luck and if by some miricle this helps someone find it, i'd love a souvenir from the treasure.
This is really cool. I just checked out the area you’ve pinpointed and while I don’t think it’s something to be ruled out immediately, the general consensus seems to be that the last line of the poem is likely referring to the Great Salt Lake which you wouldn’t be able to see from that far south even if you did have a good vantage point. That said, ‘salty blues’ could be just as obscure as some of the other clues and the GSL may not be the solve there. That’s the beauty of this whole thing. You can plug the clues into quite a number of trails along the wasatch front and make them fit pretty well. Especially given each individual’s unique interpretation of the clues.
On the downside, I’m becoming less enchanted with the whole thing as people are wreaking havoc on the trails. I’ve been in touch with a number of people who are seeking and we are all seeing excess trash, human waste (unburied), holes dug in search of the treasure and not filled back in. It’s a bit disheartening and it makes me hope that the treasure is found soon so that all the folks who otherwise wouldn’t be out there get back off the trails.
Anyway, I digress, I do hope that if someone finds the treasure using your clues that they’ll share a bit with you. Cheers
Thanks. The closet ive ever been to Utah is las vegas. It looks like beautiful country, im sorry people are ruining the peacefulness of it. Im from Nova Scotia and happened upon this this morning and wasted too much time on it. I wish we had something like this here. Best of luck to you!
If nothing else, you’ve enlightened me to a hike I hadn’t known before. I’ve always had friends tell me about Hobble Creek Canyon and it looks like a really nice area so I’ll be adding it to my growing list of cool hikes Im being exposed to because of this.
I should add that you’re near the greatest treasure hunt known to man… The Curse of Oak Island. XD
True. Ive been on the island a couple of times but you're not allowed to search and you'd have no rights to it if you found it. Its also pretty common breif that a previous inhabitant found it and took off with it.
I like the cherry campground idea. I was thinking down south just not sure about the salty blues. That’s the only issue I am finding with down in hobble creek canyon… but I might as well check it out!
Awesome! Best of luck.
Forgive my ignorance about Utah, would you be able to see the salt flats from that area? I googled some images of salt flats sunsets and we got a blue red thing going on there.
I don't believe so but they gave a map showing a huge rectangle and the location you talk about is in the box. The issue is that we can't know for sure that they are talking about the salt flats or salt lake...
Thought I had the spot but after 20+ miles put in and over 8 hours I’m crossing this place off as a no go. Elevation is just to high for the type of trees they had in the video. Plus they mentioned they did it in flip flops so high doubt it’s up here. If anyone wants to give it a go this is where I was looking. Everything matched up to a T but couldn’t find a stone that looked like a bear and there are hardly any cliffs you can get to safely.
Sardine peak. Hang right on the entry trail to find the tunnel of trees. Water is nearby.. take a left when the trail forks and hangs north into the assent with switchbacks
this matches about 100 trails
Cool, thanks for the update. That looks like a pretty neat hike. I’ll have to add it to my list of hikes to check out.
Did you see anything resembling a black bird or clicking, I feel like once someone figures that out for sure, they’ll know they’re in the right place.
my biggest solve was the bear canyon suspension bridge. Works perfectly with the path swining north, starting your climb, switchbacks. But I can't make the beginning of the poem work...
I was down at Bear Canyon on Tuesday afternoon and was thinking the same as you. Hiked all over some of the trails near the little footbridge east of the suspension bridge and went up on trail of the eagle as the first portion of that trail is generally northerly and winds back and forth, but no cliffs up there. Nevertheless, looked under many of the substantial trees up on that hillside to no avail.
There’s a bear look alike stone in the Olympus trail and a emerald green arch like 3 miles before some rocky cliffs but there was also a wooden bear statue in the start of the small cottonwood trails…..idk
The clue was that it’s not hidden on a Ski Resort
This is a stupid clue because they already said it's not on private land. That would have left Alta.
This is wrong. All the ski resorts in the Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons have Forest Service Land. In fact the majority of all the land they have is federal land.
I’m headed up to grab it tonight. Went this morning and everything lines up. Wish me luck 🍀
Definitely follow-up with us all if you find it. I’m going to be super interested to hear the solves for the clues.
So did you find anything?
What trail did you think it was?
Curious as to what you thought and your answer to the cipher
I think this might be the right area, still trying to make everything work out tho.
It does look like it just barely fits inside the southern border of the map from the KSL article. Among most I’ve talked to the consensus is that the view of the salty blues is likely the Great Salt Lake which obviously lends itself better to Davis county trails as well as some in SLCo. What’s your thoughts on Salty Blues as it would relate to this location?
Yeah, certainly can't make that fit the area I was looking at. I also noticed there is a star on the KSL map boundaries in Bountiful.
Blackhawk is definitely one of the best fits for the blackbird clue. That seems to be the most obscure of them all. As for the star in Davis County, it is something that has influenced the areas I’ve searched, but I still kind of wonder if it’s a coincidence or intentionally placed.
Is there a river, creek or spring to fallow?
I’ve got another lead on a trail however it’s high traffic so I’m guessing it would have been to easy to take a chest up there and get spotted.
I’ll let you know tomorrow
Definitely update again on your progress. I’m happy to also share where I’ve been. Not that I’ve completely exhausted all options on these hikes, but I just feel like nothing was matching up clue-wise. I’ve done Bear Canyon /Trail of the Eagle in Draper, Ferguson Canyon, Bell Canyon, and Adam’s Canyon in Kaysville. My aunt has checked out Deuel Creek and Farmington Canyon over the weekend. Of the two, she felt like Farmington Canyon could still hold opportunity.
As far as a high traffic trail like you mentioned, I assume the guys did it on off-hours on a weekday or something just to avoid being seen. I figure if it was easy enough to do in flip-flops it seems likely to be in a high-traffic area.
Some of these I want to check out. I’ve checked bells canyon so far. Makes me wonder if it’s not a popular hike since like you said they’d easily be spotted.
But seriously, has anyone even figured out what the black bird clicks is or seen
Something and thought “that’s definitely it” I can’t wait to see how someone solves this
Elsewhere in the thread it’s been discussed that blackbird clicks may be ‘one km as the crow flies’, so 0.62mi. This seems like the most logical solve on this one. I was originally thinking it would be a trail-cam or security cam or something.
Yeah I was thinking trail cam
With the latest clue I'm certain I have it. Everything matches up so well. I'm going first thing in the morning tomorrow and I'll let you know if I've found it!
Well if we're thinking the same trail I'll see you at 8am 🤣
Sadly, I went this morning to where I thought it was and it didn't pan out. I could tell somebody had the same idea, though, as there were a few places where they'd dug just a few inches into some dirt. Onto the next clue!
Where did you think you had it?
What are you thinking for the "hikers rest" part? I feel like this HAS to be more specific than "a trailhead" or "a camp site".
Ya find it??
For those that use Reddit we have a subreddit dedicated to finding the treasure! r/Utahtreasurehunt
Could they bear made of stone be a cave painting of one? The tunnel of emerald green could be a canopy of trees, And the last part must mean you would be on the side that's faces the salt lake
Black bird clicks is the one I’m trying to get help with.
A click is a kilometer.
A crow is often looked at as a black bird.
A common saying is "as the crow flies."
one click as the crow flies.
Oh shoot. I think you’re right.
Ive been doing a lot of brainstorming, and this is definitely a stretch. Ive been noticing them posting a lot of beetle songs on there instagram story. Blackbird singing in the dead of night might have something to do with it. There is a hike with pictographs of plenty of animals and other stuff, and it as made by the Fremont Indians. The trail follows a river and a lot of the clues match up, and John Lennon has a connection with the word Fremont.
It’s Paul tapping his feet. He went out and got tap dancing shoes to wear while recording Blackbird. He pointed the mics down towards his feet so it would specifically pick up his tapping. That’s the clicking noise in the background of The Beatles - Blackbird
So what do we make of this info
I just figured it out
Did you? Are you going there right now or just figured out the black bird part?
Soooo... you feeling 10K richer?
I was wondering when someone else would figure this out. Been seeing a lot of “maybe it can only be found at night because of the ‘blackbird singing in the dead of night’”
I think If these people are going to keep the hint then they should give out some kind of hint. Not the dumb one they gave us on Thursday. And honestly I think the whole hint thing they did in different states was a dumb idea
What was it? I can't find where to find updates or clues.
Its on there Instagram onthejohn and the.cline.family
I'm new to Insta, and I was looking at there photos but all I see is the pic of the kid and dog and stuff
The clue today was these numbers 6,11,13,21,8,18,10,3,17,5,9,20,8,11 any ideas?
If you discard the 6 and read the next 5 numbers you get a half a gps coordinate, it is a longitudinal line that coincidentally runs through the search area, including a hollow called Magpie hollow. One of the guys who buried the treasure shared a post by a searcher about how they were looking in Magpie hollow a few days ago.
I think it's all coincidence but it's quite strange anyway.
Matthew 6:21 is the key
Matthew 6:21-For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Where was this posted? On Instagram?
I feel like people are giving fake clues because I signed up for emails and I don't get these. I also thought they were only giving weekly clues which would be Friday
I concur. Exactly why I want to confirm the origin of this clue. I didn’t think we’d see another clue until later in the week and I haven’t received another email.
This clue was given on Instagram, they had 2 clues that had to be found a key and a cipher. The people who found them got to choose whether to share it with everyone else and receive $500 or to keep it to themselves. Those who found the cipher and key decided to accept the $500 and share these clues.
Thanks for the concise explanation. This is the only time I have ever had any FOMO for not having any socials. Haha
These were posted on their Instagram stories, however, it's the letter F K M U H R J C Q E I T H K as the cipher and "Matthew 6:21 is the key". They were not emailed
What’s up with the numbers posted by Plenty-Drummer? Where did those come from?
I think that is his interpretation of how you solve it. Those numbers represent the letter position on the alphabet. ( probably just a theory)
Those are the numbers each letter is at in the alphabet, not sure if they're onto something or not with that
Ok. Gotcha. I’m just peeking at this stuff between work tasks at the moment so I hadn’t sat down to try and decide it yet. Thanks all.
Where did you get those numbers
Update. I looked at it again. These are just the placement of the letters in the alphabet. F is 6, K is 11, m is 13 etc
yes, its the placement of the letters sorry i should have explained.
The guy posted on his Instagram he went there on his lunch break and according to his Facebook/LinkedIn he works in salt lake and lives there so it has to be close enough to Salt Lake City where he could go on his lunch break
The guy flips houses all over Utah though. Its just the main office in salt lake city. Unfortunately the rest still can't be fully ruled out
this is making me so mad, I followed all the clues perfectly and it led me to a cliff line that I could see the great salt lake from it looked like someone else had been there before me cuz there was some loose dirt under a lone tree. But I quickly realized that the “creek” i had been following had been more of a brook. This made me so mad, because the kilometer clue, stone bear and emerald tunnel clue all checked out. there was even an inn at the bottom! just that dang brook at the bottom…
Let me go get my seer stone will figure this out.
What about the Old Ephraim Bear statutes any of stone?
You get the stone, I’ll provide the hat. We’ll split the loot 50/50.
Ok, but here is this
Logan is not included in map the provided on their insta page
"Salty blues" it must be in a city that votes democrat.
Or it's the great salt lake....
What does kliks mean?
Oh yeah yeah gotcha - that’s not how I spelled it in my head haha. It’s an idea worth thinking abt tho
its outside the map area, its not Ephraim's grave.
I’m stuck on the black bird clicking. A real bird or metaphor?
A click is a kilometer. I think this is "One kilometer as the crow flies" which is .63 miles.
You’re the only other one I’ve seen so far who has made the connection to clicks. (At least publicly). I was over complicating it though when discussing it with friends last week because in numerology the crow is often represented by the number 2 so I was actually thinking 2km, but I think it’s safe to assume your solve is more logical and practical.
This is definitely one of the more obscure clues. My best guess on that has been either a wildlife trail cam or a security camera of some kind. There are several species of blackbird which do make clicking noises, but yeah, this one has been one of the harder to make sense of. I suspect whoever gets on the correct trail would know it when they see it and things would start falling into place.
Anyone willing to share the new poem/clue? I signed up for the emails but wasn’t sent to clue. Thanks!
It’s not on a ski resort. That was the clue
Same. I never received the clue. DM me if you don’t want to post publicly!
as of 47 mins ago they hadn’t sent them out yet, according the onthejohn’s ig story
can someone send me the new photo clue? i had signed up for the email but didn’t receive it.
I’m happy to forward you the email if you wanna DM me your email address.
can you forward it to me too?
Can you forward to me as well, [email protected] is my email
I signed up for the emails a day after they sent out the hint, would you send it to me too!? My email is [email protected] thanks so much!!
I also signed up for the emails. It didn't work. I'd really appreciate it if you also sent it to me as well
Their instagram stories have been hinting the beetles and a few songs, Blackbird sings in the dead of night. I wonder if you can only here the blackbird click at night and follow the trail from there.
The only thing I can think of for the first clue is the living room hike
Theres a trail call mountain view trail in sandy which follows almost all the rules except the stone bear.
Even the blackbird? It’s got me stumped
Find the hikers rest... it's the first step
Those who have hunted for the fenn treasure might have a leg up.. lol
Why do you say that?
Say what... then fenn treasure was all about solving a poem... in ten years. A few got close but there was only 1 prize for the completion of the clues
As for the bear.... maybe and it's just a thought.. it's not the bear that is as important as the greeting..
Paul used tap shoes to make the click in Blackbird, but the clue reads black bird not blackbird
I'm thinking maybe it starts in a campground and goes to a hike but I'm not sure.
I'm thinking by now a lot of people have the area narrowed down to a few steps left in the puzzle.
This is what the new clue said?
I don’t know where to go with this clue…any ideas on this one?
Was this clue emailed to you??
I can’t find it in my email or
That’s just on their Instagram bio… not a clue
Anyone know what all the clues that came out are? Im new to insta cause i signed up to progress the treasure hunt, and i thought the bio was the clues.
Check The.cline.family Instagram stories for new update!
Not a fan of the idea of what they’re doing next.
I don’t have Instagram. Are you able to detail here what you’re referring to?
So who are the two people he is talking about in his Instagram post???
For those of you that don’t know. There are two people that are deciphering some code. If they can decipher it, they will uncover a new clue to help them find the treasure. They can choose to keep the clue to themselves. Or, if they share the clue with everyone, they get $500.
The clues are being hid in 2 different states, those people have to communicate to solve the clue, it’s a code. Then if they want to release the answer they get $500. Or they can keep the clue to themselves but they won’t be in Utah so hopefully they won’t wanna keep it private
The Texas one has been found!
Where can I get the photo clue?
I’m happy to forward you the hint email if you want to either DM your email or reply with it here.
Is there a new clue today or is this a previous one you’re talking about?
I’m assuming the one from last week. I haven’t seen a new one. Also, FWIW, I don’t have Instagram, but I was told that photo they had included in the email last week was also used last year so I haven’t really been regarding it as an actual clue. Maybe I’ve been misinformed though.
Did y’all see the new clue? What are our thoughts ?
Yeah. Nothing new in my book. I think most people had already zeroed in on ‘as the crow flies’. So now that it’s confirmed everyone will be searching right around the 1km mark at every trail. : )
What trail do you think it is?
As of now I have a list of trails which could still technically fit the clues. But I’ll keep those specific thoughts to myself until I keep crossing them off. Seems like the confirmation of this clue will accelerate the whole thing. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it found by the weekend.
What's the clue?
early 1900s there were tunnels installed in the Emerald hill near grizzly mine. Cant find it on the map though. most info i've found here.
Ran into a Dead end.
I believe Grizzly mine is up near Alta or possibly on Alta property which would obviously disqualify it given last weeks clues.
Looking at the map in the link it should be Between Emma's Mine and silver lake.
There are a few building around there now. However, I couldnt pinpoint it.
Oh yeah, that may even be on solitude property. In any case, I think it would be ruled out for a couple other reasons as well. It’s not really on a west facing slope for one.
I’ve gone to so many hikes and I am so stumped. I decoded the cipher today too and I seriously don’t know where the heck this thing is. I went drenched in the rain to find it! Sucked.
Now that’s commitment. I’m up north so I luckily didn’t get any
did anyone check the cliffs lookout on the grotto trailhead in Farmington?
I’ve been to one trail that was my initial thought. I went last evening out of curiosity. However I soon became really intrigued after I began seeing features that seemed to fit snugly within the clues provided. As soon as the trail swerved north there was a section of trail that broke off from the main portion up hill where there were guided steal lines back and forth and what stunned me was a large rock that looked (to me at least) distinctly like the head of a bear. Just above this rock are some cliffs as well. However I’ve not been able to locate any distinct tree at the bottom.
\#1: From the time we parked the car to the time we arrived where the chest is hidden was approximately 1 hour. No need to trek 10 miles into the backcountry, unless you think John can hike that fast...
\#2: None of the words in the poem are the same as trail names or prominent locations. We didn't want to make it that easy for you.
This post has died out a bit due to the popularity of r/utahtreasurehunt but I appreciate you posting here for people who don’t know about that sub.
If you haven’t checked out that sub, I will say here that the answer to number 3 is: SEARCH WHERE SAILORS REST
10 miles is about the height of 100571.18 'Toy Cars Sian FKP3 Metal Model Car with Light and Sound Pull Back Toy Cars' lined up
10 miles is 16.09 km
