Why did Tom not vouch for Shiv?

Why did Tom not vouch for Shiv?

DaisyJa

For starters, I think he got a glimpse of what she might have been feeling in the finale dinner wherein you have to choose between acknowledging the reality of a situation or put your emotions on display at the risk of ridicule. It’s only been a matter of a day since their beach conversation, he doesn’t hate her but he also doesn’t have the ability to reciprocate her attempts at amends or advocate for her being further in charge when it wouldn’t even likely be in either of their interests and would leave him subject to some nasty remarks from Logan.

Dream_weaver_S

Well said!

MR_TELEVOID

None of the above. He's clearly just terrified of Logan to the extent he loses all ability to think properly.

izzyjosten

I don't think he's capable of sharing his opinion with Logan, its like an actual lack of skill. I don't think he can vouch for himself either, both times he gets a promotion on the show it was bc Shiv talked to Logan.

HelsBels2102

It's none of the above, he doesn't want her to be CEO. Also he seemed pretty upset about the dinner/whole marriage thing still on the tarmac so maybe like fuck her

L3sPau1

This ^^^^

Dream_weaver_S

So he hates her?

HelsBels2102

Why does he hate her?

StoicSecurity

He doesn’t hate, hate her. But she is awful and he *should* hate her for all the reasons you should’ve seen over the fist 20 episodes.

Dream_weaver_S

Because fuck her? Perhaps “intensely dislikes” is a better option

HelsBels2102

Well he doesn't even necessarily dislike her. He's just sick of her shit, sick her underappriciation and he's going to look out for his own interests. That's nothing about hate or dislike. But I suppose it's more dislike then hate, but more annoyed at and upset with then dislike

DaisyJa

He’s angry and frustrated with her, and the whole situation he’s found himself in, and depending on his current self-awareness himself.

WildMajesticUnicorn

I would go with “he lacks the skill to push Shiv subtly.” I think he was trying to make it look like he wasn’t just pushing his wife, but he didn’t do it very well.

winkies_diner

My take on it was that he was playing a similar game as Roman by putting up a false first choice so that it would be shot down by Logan so that their actual preferred choice would be selected. The crucial difference is that Roman made the better play.

HelsBels2102

Roman meant that he wanted the top job. And Tom didn't want to vouch for Shiv. He never does in that convo, not like he does Gerri and Roman

WeHereForYou

I don’t think Roman is that clever lol.

WildMajesticUnicorn

I agree. I think Roman wanted it but hedged his bet by offering Gerri. It’s still a decent outcome for him, but I don’t think it was his true first choice.

winkies_diner

True-- I think Roman would definitely have liked to have be chosen as top dog, but he's savvy enough to know: 1.) No one takes him seriously 2.) He'd always need Gerri for her expertise just to get the job done and to avoid another crash and burn debacle and most importantly 3.) Roman knows his dad very well and knows that Logan is a stubborn and spiteful SOB who doesn't like to be told what to do. So given the above, he hedged his bets and decided that the best way forward was to ring his father to tell him he wanted to be CEO, all the while knowing full well that Logan would rebuff him, thus leaving Gerri as a strong alternative. All told, Roman realises that having Gerri in charge would be much better for him than Shiv. Plus, Roman is not ever going to pass up an opportunity to spite his sister.

WildMajesticUnicorn

I’m not so sure it wasn’t possible for Roman to have been chosen. Roman is seen as not ready, but calling and saying, “I’m the choice. Pick me.” would have commanded more respect and could have convinced Logan Roman was ready to lead. Hedging his bets all but ensured he wasn’t going to be chosen. As it is, his plan worked because Shiv couldn’t complete her task. It Shiv had gotten the lawyer, Roman’s plan wouldn’t have worked so well.

winkies_diner

Then you're not paying attention.

Ok-Expression-4163

I think he's having a moment of reflection in terms of how much he tried to do for her and their marriage, vs what he actually got out of it from her end. Perhaps he's over it, or maybe a short time of bitterness where deep down, even unconsciously perhaps, he doesn't want to bat for her because he doesn't think she deserves his efforts anymore and he doesn't want to be taken for granted?

BigBob-omb91

I think Tom was attempting (unsuccessfully) to back Shiv without being obvious about it. He was trying to appear impartial by saying he liked the others before he got around to pushing her. It seemed to me that Logan called his bluff when he asked if Tom was playing the “reverse banjo.”

L3sPau1

He hates Shiv. He screwed her. He knows she’s not invested in a marriage only in Shiv. Everything is a transaction and he wants to be close to the money in order to get his payoff a d fuck right off back to Minnesota
