Piston and Rod out of the series of engine I work on the most. Caterpillar 3600.
By - Healthy-Gap9904
plot twist: its from a regular sized engine, he is just really short
Shhhh. I’m actually a gnome. Nobody knows.
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives should be the name of a convenience store not a government agency
[Ever been to the Cat headquarters in Peoria Illinois?](https://imgur.com/a/aTBYrWP/)
I have not been. I hope to go one of these days
I don't know why I was expecting a different kind of cat, like the internet is based on, but I prefer your post to the other cat posts.
It’s a Cat post not a cat post.
500 lbft torque, 40 hp at 1000 rpm
It’s about 300hp per hole. These engines come in 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder, 12 cylinder, 16 cylinder.
Id like one of those in my truck please
Only 40? Clearly it’s shit then /s
I love the shirt!
No replacement for displacement? Had no clue, this is super cool!
you could seat-belt it in to the passenger seat
Not only is that hardware skookum, but the man holding it looks skookum AF as well.
I like your tee shirt
I think we can pretty safely do without the BATF, but how do they relate to dogs?
They shoot your dog when the bust down your door. Doesn’t matter what size dog or if the have they have wrong address.
ahhhh. I thought it was some referenced to bullpup weapons
Ah yes, America
doesn't matter what organization they work for specifically, cops are cops, and cops will fuckin' murder your dog right in front of you for no reason
3-10 puppers shot daily in the U.S.
*in front of your wife & children. Even if the dog is kenneled.
And after they can't find the tons of cocaine they were looking for, will still arrest you for half a gram of marijuana in your bedroom. Just so they can say their terrorism wasn't completely for nothing.
Oh ya. I assumed it was something more convoluted. It's usually the FBI, NSA, SWAT, LEO, local Sheriff, state Sheriff, ICE, or DEA who do the no-knocks though. I just want to buy a suppressor in less than a year without submitting me DNA.
But how else will the government prevent secret gunfights from taking place in crowded shopping malls on a daily basis?
Thank god the ATF is around, if not there could be a secret gunfight happening around you right now! Just like in John Wick!
How much oil clearance between the rod bearing and the rod journal? I'm used to much smaller stuff and I've always been curious about big applications like this.
With the engines and compressors I work with we will get anywhere from .002 to .010 during bump checks. It Depends on the machine. Usually
The larger machines have a bit larger tolerance for clearances
I'm here for the t-shirt.
Save the pups!
(and semi-innocent cult members)
*Edit*: Sloppy phrasing. An awful lot of the people at the Branch Davidian compound were as innocent as they come. Even those who were helping Koresh in his creepo-brainwashing-totalitarian thing weren't guilty of a crime punishable by dying in a fire.
Many people were fully innocent, children, babies, women who were simply misguided and manipulated by that sociopath. Law enforcement (and their worshippers) just has a track record for pinning all collateral damage they cause on the person they’re after, even when it’s caused by their own incompetence. IE the UPS truck shoot out where they used cars with civilians inside for cover and aired out the hostage and a bystander along with the robbers
Oh shit. I already forgot about the UPS shootout... yes, I think I agree with you on all of this.
Idk I think the children and unborn were a bit beyond semi-innocent lol
Where can I get my defund koresh shirt?
None left, The fire burned all of them.
Would make a pretty slick mailbox stand.
Yeah it really would. I wanna get my hands on a cooper or Clark or old ingersol KB rod and piston. the entrance to the yard has one on each side of the gate
I asked for that bent one from the last Dresser I was on. Someone a lot higher up than me had dibs though.
That’s usually what happens here. Either that or cat wants the core back. Lol
Can they straighten bent rods somehow? That big Dresser rod was only bent and twisted a few thou, maybe it got sent back. My Forman said it would run, but we wouldn’t warranty the work.
I’ve seen machine shops straighten the piston rods but I’m not sure about connecting rods.
auto transmission fluid?
With that t-shirt I really expected tactical toes to be in the photo.
Thorogoods all the way!
Skookum boots if I say so myself
Wish I still smoked. Would be a rocking ashtray!
Everyone's complimenting your shirt, and it's cute, but I don't get the joke :-(
The police as a whole shoot way too many dogs. The Department of Justice estimated they kill 10,000 dogs every year. That's more than a dog every hour of every day, each year.
They then can falsify the police reports and claim the dogs were aggressive. Even if the dog survives the shooting, they hardly can testify. The owner's testimony mean nothing when up against a police officer. And the worst part is that even if the cop is caught lying in a report, lying on a police report isn't illegal in many states.
So it's very fucked up
*John Wick has entered the chat*
Seems like making it illegal to lie on a police report would be a good step, irrespective of all other issues.
But yeah that is fucked up.
It IS illegal to lie on a police report. Cops do it often however. And they lie to people ALL the damn time. Luckily with everything behind recorded it’s becoming more known.
Umm, did you miss the part, in the comment I was responding to, about how in some states it's not illegal to lie on a police report? Because that's what I was responding to.
Lmao who's going to make sure the cops dont lie? More lying cops? The system is rotten to it's core because they've lost so much public trust.
Oh I guess we should just leave everything how it is then.
What part of my response makes you think I'm in favor of keeping things how they are.... I just think adding more dirty cops to a dirty cop problem isn't the best solution
Thank you for reminding me why I stopped coming to Reddit.
Or we could defund the police.
ATF is know for killing puppers, see: Ruby Ridge
Well... women and children too, see: Ruby Ridge
Say what you will about Ruby Ridge, at least they didn't have a dedicated dog-shooting team.
Ahhh, thank you.
"Hello, is this the based department? "
Thank you. Lol
Thank you sir!
Up for the shirt
Thanks it’s one of my favorite
Same, that shirt is amazing. A quick google and I couldn't find that exact one.
@9mmsmg on Instagram was sellin em on T spring a while back and I got one
They have some pretty neat shirts, but I'm not seeing that one anymore unfortunately. Thanks for the source tho!
I thought that was a piston out of a KLR for a sec, thanks for clarifying
Love the shirt
Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or is the piston skirt deformed? What’s the story behind what happened?
I think it's just the angle of the picture and the slight tilt of the ground.
I think it’s the angle of the photo and the scuffs on the piston
Your piston and rod are bigger than the long block in my Honda sedan.
Also are those ARP rod bolts or what? I see they are 12pt. Wonder what that torque spec is.
I didn’t see you where wondering about the torque. On these it’s 75ft lbs, then 275ft lbs then 180 degrees.
Thanks! Always curious
Cat uses a lot of hardware from Lake Erie Screw. Recently the fasteners no longer carry the LE stamp on the head but I don't know if they've changed manufactures.
I know the 3600 engines had some problems with rod bolts for a while. They required frequent torque checking. Cat sold special instrumented bolts that could be checked with a meter instead of having to put a wrench on them.
I know the guy who owned Haynes Corp, they made the injectors for cat engines. He sold it for a crapload of money, and his son now runs the plant (they're called Progress Rail now). Super nice guy, has a wine collection somewhere in the 5-8 million dollar range.
Well tell him we appreciate the low price of Cat injectors vs. the competition.
Injector? What’s an injector?
I know the gas engines had less frequent issues with the rods and the diesel versions did.
The new Adem4 engines are using proprietary tensioner tooling similar to the head tooling. Haven’t had a chance to work with that setup yet. With the amount of a4 3600s they’ve set and are setting in this area. It will only be a matter of time.
You’ve got me really curious what such bolts look like. For some reason I’m imaging a small LCD screen in the fastener head. /s
But yeah, I’m curious how torque is checked with a meter?
The bolts were instrumented with strain gauges.
As for the appearance, they look just like ARP hardware. I wouldn't doubt that ARP also uses LE as a supplier.
In going to assume they inserted passive resistors into the fastener. As resistors under pressure/strain change values which can be precisely measured. This is similar to how digital torque wrenches and electronic scales work.
I remember seeing one company that had a system where their fasteners have the instruments actually transmit the data so they can be monitored remotely. They where using them on wind turbines. I was wondering how exactly they worked but that clears that up.
I am now going down the rabbit hole of instrumented fasteners. I imagine that’s how load cells on cranes work as well.
For modern mobile cranes, I would expect the load measuring to be a combination of brake torque on the spool and possibly hydraulic pressure monitoring in the boom cylinders. I've never worked with cranes, but that seems more straightforward than measuring the strain in the turntable bolts.
[these ](https://www.fadequipmentstore.com/products/radiolink-plus?variant=37625535627413¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg6_chsn78AIVOgytBh2F9A2EEAQYAiABEgLzzPD_BwE) are the load cells I was referring too.
For service truck cranes many of the systems do measure off hydraulic pressure on the boom
Those look cool. I would guess that they are using strain gauges.
When I worked offshore a lot of the lift boat cranes used those
Shirt gets an upvote.
I have one of these pistons as an ashtray at my house.
That nice you only have to empty it about what, every leap year?
Do you smoke Labrador joints?
Even though it’s legal, can still get piss tested for work. Also, I just turn grey, throw up, and go to bed.
That's crazy. How much does it weight? What kind of applications is it used on?
That assembly weights about 300lbs. The application I deal with most is natural gas compressors. However the engine is also used for generators, pumps, and other Industrial machinery as well as power plants for boats.
We have a number of 3608’s, 2 3612’s, and a monster 3616 at my work. As well as a few Waukesha 7042’s.
Nice! I just got some working on. 42 today. Earlier I was on a pair of 3606s!
That's a heavy ass ornament
This piston and rod is out of a Caterpillar G3600 engine. It’s not the biggest but still pretty Impressive in size. I’m about 6’ 2” tall, or 1.88 meters for you metric folks. This one has obviously been retired to shop yard ornament. Definitely my favorite engine to work on. There are natural gas and diesel versions and I work almost exclusively on the gas.
I operate a plant with exclusively the D3612(the Diesel/Distillate version. It looks like pretty much the same size pistola. How can you tell the difference?
Edit: *diesel/heavy fuel
Sorry, I’m drunk
Can't imagine the size of the turbo... Man I'd love that lol
I will have to dig up a picture of one
For that size of engine it has gotta be an axial flow turbine and man do I have a use for one of those
There’s where I got my start. Worked out of Midland for a while. Now I’m all over. I Work in the Delaware a
Nice man, small world
love the workability of the 3600, got to do a course in peoria to learn to rebuild them. not great for quickly changing speeds and loads, but a sturdy engine and fairly easy to work on.
Add an electronic governor and it’s the perfect engine.
For the gas compression application these engines are excellent. Decent fuel gas, proper PMs and a good
Load these things just run and run
What kind of weedeaters do you work on?
The bigger they get the more they look like RC car pistons
Shhh I’m Trying not to let anyone know that I am a gnome!! If anyone asks these aren’t really weed eaters
