How to update retroarch
By - dissonant87
Probably get downvoted, but if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.
Is your device running and doing what you want it to do? If yes, then leave it alone.
Maybe I'm just gunshy because I updated RetroArch on my RP2, and it fucked a bunch of things up.
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
What OS are you using? If you have ArkOS, you can update the RetroArch cores from the settings menu. I don’t think any of the other 351P OS’es allow for directly updating RetroArch.
Thinking of going to Arkos but noticed development stopped. Actually, I think development stopped for 351elec as well. What are the main benefits for switching? For some reason, my psx games without any enhanced resolution or shaders stutters at times for more intensive games (final fantasy ix in battle mainly). Wondering if Arkos would fix this.
OK, well you can’t update RetroArch then.
351Elec had stopped development, but [got picked up again by a different group](https://github.com/351ELEC/351ELEC/releases). And ArkOS is still being developed too, just not for the 351P/M specifically.
And I prefer 351Elec, personally, so probably not the best person to speak to the benefits or ArkOS.
Development restarted for 351elec.
The only thing I really need improved is PPSSPP so I’m not too fussed about it…
RetroArch doesn't use PPSSPP.
Your performance there can be slightly improved by turning on frameskipping and setting the value to 1 frame.
Performance on PSP is going to vary wildly, depending on the demands of the particular game. It's not really going to be better until the next series of better processors finds it's way into handheld devices and they become commercially available. So...later this year maybe?😀
I’m well aware. Which is why retroarch being updated isn’t super important to me, you see.
Then you should check this out if you haven't already:
Have done. Castlevania still won't load. Still seems to be an issue related to the 351Elec distro.
Yeah, that one's been an issue. Apparently mashing start at the Konami logo can get you past the video it hangs on, and you can drop a save state to play normally. Still, it's something I hope can get fixed at some point.
I’ll have to try that. Honestly it got me curious enough to dig around on the web and eventually find an English translation of Rondo of Blood on the TG 16 CD, so that was kind of cool.
That totally worked! Thanks for the tip. :)
Basic rule of thumb for updating retroarch on anything is, is it officially supported by the retroarch project team or not. Generally speaking major updates that get posted on their site are fixes or changes for their officially supported devices, you can see it on their change logs.
If you have retroarch that isn't officially supported, you will want to wait for whoever ported retroarch for your device to make a version for said device. Also worth mentioning is most performance gains on retroarch will be coming from core updates rather than retroarch updating itself so you don't need to worry too much about updates.
Oh and fun fact, if you really want to stay up to date with retroarch and want to play on sbc devices, look for ones that use opendingus (like the rg350m) since retroarch added that os as an official platform.
