Loki, Episode 1 - Discussion Thread

Miss Minutes: "nexus... madness.. multiverse"
Me: "I like where this is going.."
Perfect tease for the followup of this TV show coming in...
Oh look it’s everything Wandavision hinted at
I do like how a lot of people thought WandaVision not delivering on everything it hinted at was a failure on the part of that show, as if we haven’t been watching the MCU hint at things for 13 years…
"Leading to another multiversal war"... Yeah, that wasn't foreshadowing. 😱
Yeah, the animation reminded me a lot of the annihilation event.
Ngl, that kinda makes me think of Secret Wars... and I’m scared to be hyped
**What is a fish?**
I’d like to understand the threat before I comply
I comply, I comply!
Yooooo that was Pillboi!!! Jacksonville represent!!
fellow good place fan 🙌🏻 knew he'd be amazing the moment I saw him
Bortles! For this character... Portals!
I was just thinking about Pillboi yesterday.
Eugene Cordero is such a great comedic actor.
Eugene Cordero is such an underrated comedic actor. Between him and Kathryn Hahn, I'm loving the great comedic talent Marvel is bringing to our screens. Next, Lamorne Morris please?
Props to whoever wrote that / had the idea
His delivery of all his lines are always gold
The horns aren’t devil horns? They’re Loki’s helmet?
that’s what i just said to my boyfriend! definitely loki’s horned helmet
You know what...
Dare I think the M name?
#**LOKI IS MEPHISTO**
Really enjoying the Hiddleston and Wilson dynamics already
Just waiting for a “wow”
Fucking hell! I just remembered i lost my Bet!!! Aaaahh! Wilson didn't say any 'Wow'!!!!
I really appreciate that Mobius knows how to deal with Loki. He doesn't confront him too directly, doesn't take his bait, just stays congenial and friendly, like he's got a half feral shelter cat that he's trying to put at ease. But, he does call him out on his bullshit in a way that forces Loki to self reflect, which is something Loki desperately avoids doing.
He knows to let Loki tire himself out and then engage him, knowing when push and when to let him digest the situation or lesson. He pushed too hard at the Avengers part tbh and got lucky with Loki letting his curiosity get the better of him.
"You like to talk, talkie talkie..."
What if I’m a robot and don’t know it?
He was a Frost Giant and didn't know I'm not surprised he hesitated.
I thought the same thing! Like he stops to ask “would Odin tell me if I was a robot?”
Full name: Loki Robotson
Okay but I feel like we all have this feeling when clicking those boxes with cars in them
"Would a human click the one that has a tiny corner of a bus? Or would only a robot do that? Hmmm..."
The Infinity Stones... the driving force behind a decades worth of epic storytelling... thought to be the most powerful McGuffins in all existence... simply collected across timelines like loose change and tossed into a junk drawer. WOW, just like that, Phase 4 is introducing us to whole lot bigger universe.
70’s cartoon was a nice effect.
It also had a similar style as The Jetsons cartoon.
And the TVA city looked like a live-action Jetsons world.
Definitely retro sci-fi. It reminded me of vintage Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
“What’s your name?”
10/10 am here for Pillboi joining the Avengers.
“Hello, Mr. Stark! Have I got an idea for you!”
Needed more Donkey Doug, aka Donkey Dad.
I really loved the scene where Loki was escaping to get back the Tesseract, and no one in the office gave a crap about him running around. That, and the cart full of Infinity Stones made it abundantly clear what kind of power level he was dealing with in the TVA. Can’t wait to see what comes of it all.
What comes of the TVA? I assume they get destroyed given the title of the next Dr Strange movie. Branching timelines going out of control cause a multiverse of madness.
That is my theory from now on. Loki saying he will burn the TVA to the ground was probably a tongue-in-cheek foreshadow, as the evil version of him probably will, when they get to the low point of Loki's Hero Journey.
Woah, Tom was an executive producer?
He’s apparently very smart on the mcu timeline and I think the comics in general, so he actually gave a lot of direction to Owen in particular, according to Owen in the featurette.
Tom has read the comics. After Journey Into Mystery ended, he wrote a letter to the writer thanking him for writing such a good Loki story.
I always love to hear that an actor is genuinely a fan of the franchise they’re a part of
I love that
Makes him sound really smart
he is smart
In an interview, the show’s director Kate Herron mentioned that before they began filming, Tom Hiddleston gave a formal presentation (complete with video clips) on the whole entire story of Loki and his experience playing him and they called it the “Loki Lecture/Lesson”. It’s just awesome to know that the actor is devoted and loves the character just as much as the fans :-)
He fessed up in a Variety interview that a whiteboard was involved. And Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan couldn't sneak off FATWS set to see the lecture because production scheduled their biggest scene for that day.
Ah, the intense eye contact therapy session, I remember
Okay now I *need* to see that video. It sounds awesome as is Tom
Oh fuck here we go with the Mephisto theories again.
I soon as I saw the stained glass I was like oh no...
Here me out. Loki is Mephisto or the devil only in the eyes of mortals, its one of his many appearances.
Green Marvel Logo is SLICK AF
THEY HAVE ALL THE INFINITY STONES JUST SITTING IN A JUNK DRAWER!?!?!
Only 2 mind stones and no soul stones, they must be rare
The cost of a soul stone is a way higher investment than any of the rest of them.
Its probably more likely that the result of the soul stone is the variant rather then the guy holding it. While there were so many green time stones, because the variant is probably the one holding it.
I definitely agree that there were so many time stones because it's so easy to cause variances with one.
Looks like a soul stone is in the credits
Wasn’t the big orange stone the Soul Stone?
It looked like they had 349% of the Infinity Stones in just that junk drawer.
And none of them works because they technically aren't in the universe. Comic accuracy
"That criminal with the blue box"
*Doctor Who intensifies...*
The TARDIS was definitely my first thought!
I'm glad Loki is getting the detour now that he knows his ending.
The weird thing is, his job here is to restore everything, so they can put him back in that timeline, where he knows his ending. He probably doesn't want the timeline to be restored.
Def is probably a whole section of the plot. Probably why dangerous Loki goes rogue
I suspect this loki might turn out to BE dangerous loki and the tva cause it themselves by conscription this loki to stop future this loki....yeaaah time travel is wack.
But I'm guessing EVENTUALLY loki gets at least an open ended chance to get scot free and rejoin the mcu in time for all the really weard stuff.
remember us thinking that loki would become DB cooper as a way to fix the timeline? only to now discover it’s because he lost a bet to thor lmao.
I’m dead at Thor betting Loki to do that😂😂
The way he delivered that “I lost a bet to Thor!” Line was great, he was clearly still kinda sore about losing a bet to his dumb brother of all people
That ending….Wtf! Can’t wait for next week!
The TVA will be after you after this comment
The sun will shine on us again...
In about 15 minutes
I absolutely cannot wait. I think this is going to be my favorite of the shows so far, but they're all so top notch. My Stoke level for Owen Wilson is pretty damn high as well
“The variant we’re hunting is you.”
Remember... this is 2012 Avengers Loki not the Thor Ragnarok Loki... That's crazy.
Yeah, when I remembered that when he watching his file I realized he’s an even better actor than I remember because he grew the character but then is able to step back a few years in that characterization. So good.
Ik right? It’s such good acting... but also Loki 2012 does get some of that growth from watching his life in fast forward
Seeing Loki cry watching his future play out and his family die hurt me in a way I didn't expect to be hurt in episode one
He’s always been fantastic at making small performances really powerful and nuanced. He’s such a delight to watch act.
I know. It's part of why he's such a beloved character. Tom's wonderful acting portrays his emotions flawlessly and it's so easy to love the character and sympathize
There was so much character development of 3 whole movies fit into these 40 minutes. It was extremely important for _this_ version of Loki to experience Frigga’s death and a sense of belonging to Thor. I’m very happy with how it was executed.
That was a fear if mine. I was like wait, this is not the good Loki we watched sacrifice himself. And now he's learned it all.
He’s the good Loki now minus actually feeling the trauma of the original one.
Imo „good“ in his regard might be relative. My theory is that after seeing what fate had in stock for him - all the pain and lost- he wants to obtain the „absolute“ power of the TVA to 1) change Friggas path 2)maybe change Odin‘s path too and 3) create the ideal path for himself.
Exactly why he said “is this the greatest power” or something like that after dropping the infinity stones
literally he saw his mom die first, then his dad, then himself
Like poor baby watching his mum and his dad die. Thor acknowledging how much he means to him and then him dying
I think it was very important for him to see Thor crying over his body after he died. He always kinda hated thor for being the golden child and their actual son. But seeing them talking about how Thor thought they'd fight side by side forever and crying over his body definitely is important to what this loki variant will do. I am so excited to see more.
Me: “No way they squeeze several movies do character development into the first episode”
Also me: “well shit”
Time works differently here.
Jealous that this Loki gets to see Ragnarok again for the first time.
The whole interview with Mobius and him learning his fate watching the rest of his life was done really well. We get to see Loki grow and change in a similar manner we saw original Loki change through Thor 2 to infinity war- in the span of a 40 minute episode. Keep in mind this Loki just lost the battle of NY. Not to sound cruel but this is actually a good thing for Loki. No powers, the tesseract rendered a paper weight, and a prisoner of one of the most powerful forces in the universe, he had nothing else to do but reflect on his life, the life he would have lived, and himself as a person. What he becomes of it and what the audience gets, remains to be seen, but Hiddleston really nailed the inner pain and topping it off with the line “Glorious Purpose” after seeing his life end.
Some of his hubris on display as well in assuming the time heist was to stop a god king version of himself as opposed to Thanos. He really thought he was going to rule *everything*
When Mobius tells him that he loses a lot, and that it seems that his function to to bring people to higher function through his loss, that is literally the purpose of Loki in Norse mythology. The chaos he injects usually propel others to greatness.
There is an incredible video on Loki in the new God of War that explains this so well.
[video on Loki](https://youtu.be/yegRHiaao7U)
He also got to only watch the best parts of Thor: The Dark World in a finely curated montage by the TVA. Thanks Mobius!
I don't think he enjoyed the epilogue
"Mischievous Scamp" is something I'd call my cat. 😂
“you can smell the cologne of two Tony Starks” omg
Is that… Axe body spray?
So much stabbing in Loki's life
They said stabbing in the church (??) scenes and I immediately thought it was Loki stabbing people. Completely forgot about it after though
The TVA time people are called Minutemen... Now that's clever!
You can see all the names missing from the end credits. I can't wait to find out who fills in those gaps!
God that Loki theme and opening sequence are **HYPE**
It has like a stranger things/ x-files vibe. I love it
I have now completed my third migration of the year. I will be lost and homeless 5 weeks from now because I have no idea when What If?, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye will come.
We have Black Widow 7/9!
Heimdall is why we couldn't find DB Cooper. What an explanation.
Plus, a subtle detail. When Loki gets teleported, some money is left behind. I say this because some of the money D.B Cooper stole was found on a beach, consistency.
Yeah but on the other hand, the actual highjacking happened at night during a thunderstorm...
I loved that. DB went back to Asgard.
I was wondering why Loki would even bother with it seems so beneath him.
Till he mentioned he lost a bet with Thor. I thought that was a lovely touch that they used to get along.
Man, that was actually REALLY GOOD. I'm super into it. It has a completely different vibe than the other shows and I think that's a good thing. They're each standing on their own and people's preferences will be different but I'm loving this so far. Soooo many questions. I was shocked they actually just flat out said it was him in the first episode...makes me excited because it means the reveal is more about characterization than trying to pull off huge secrets. (Though I suspect we'll be seeing twists to come still).
Yep. The fact that they put the DB Cooper thing in the trailers but then it was almost a throwaway thing - makes me think we could be in for a ride.
they went the Rick and Morty route of putting mostly irrelevant scenes in the trailer.
Yeah, definitely the premiere which was the most exiting in my opinion.
Particularly the ending scene was so suspenseful, cant wait for next week
“Like you did your mother?”
I loved how Loki just snapped after Mobius said that... It was a tense scene!
To be honest the only thing I didn’t like was that Loki got blamed for Frigga’s death. The Kursed broke out on its own, went to the shield controls and broke them to take down Asgard’s defences, then tracked the Aether through the palace, which happened to be in Jane who Frigga chose to conceal and defend… but the defining factor in her death was Loki’s offhand ‘you might want to take the stairs to the left’. So if he hadn’t said that it would have gotten lost on the way to the shield controls? It would have had trouble tracking the Aether? I’m going to assume Mobius is playing on Loki’s tendency to assume everything he does is vitally important but it still bothers me.
Mobius has an agenda. He's not above showing this Loki what he wants this Loki to see in order to get him to do what he wants. If that means making Loki believe he got his mother killed so he gets a redemption path in his head, so be it. The fact that the only reason Mobius showed up at the trial and saved this Loki from reset is because he got an apprehension report right as he needed a bit of luck to catch the Loki he's after. If they are the same one, maybe he can prevent the murderous Loki from murdering people by having him self reflect on THAT aspect of his psyche before he ever does it.
Edit: AND consider this Loki is a variant because of the Avengers time jumping then Steve supposedly putting things back where they came from. The moment the heist went bust they didn't create on divergence but two. A divergence within a divergence. And that's probably out of reach to Rogers and even if not, he doesn't have two stones. His only option is to replace it before the botched heist. So this Loki is a variant squared. How valuable is that to Mobius? It also explains Loki's "I can't go back" line. The divergent time line he's from no longer exists at all.
Me watching trailer: "Man, what crazy mission does he need to go on to be DB Cooper? I can't wait to see!"
Show: "Oh, you thought that was an important part of the show's plot?"
That was such a troll on their part but I dug it, so it’s forgiven.
They know who they're fucking with, and they love every second of it.
And so are we.
I like this version better. It makes me want to see more of younger Loki and Thor just goofing around on Asgard
And Heimdall rolling his eyes, going along with it cause they're his boss's kids
A drawer full of Infinity Stones is hilarious to me considering what we've seen them do.
I just want to know why they need paperweights when there is zero airflow there ...
is there zero airflow?
"The time twister just loops you, not the furniture"
Ok does anyone else just *love* the sorta 60s/70s sci fi future aesthetic of the TVA? Like when I first saw the scenery I too was like daaaaammmmnn. And honestly it looks dope as hell.
I actually didn't see that coming... The whole show is "Loki vs Loki"!
I really wonder where the other Loki branched off from the timeline! I mean, post-Ragnorok Loki seems a lot more mellow, so is it a Loki who branched off before the Avengers?
Your not thinking big enough. Think Loki never adopted by Odin big, or Loki that grows up will Hella as his role model big. Now scrap that and think bigger then that. Like self fulfilling variation perhaps Loki episode 5 Loki goes back and commits the variant crimes so horrible that the minutemen have to recruit Loki in order to stop him, thus saving his own life from reset. That sort of bigger.
Because at the end of this series the TVA needs to be left in ruins so that we can explore a multiverse of madness.
It’s the future of the current variant Loki
Or, do they team up?
The only way he can change the sacred time line, is to reset the tva!
"a god doesn't plead"
loki crying while fast forwarding his life :((
i got a lump in my throat.
A NEXUS EVENT could lead to MADNESS and MULTIVERSAL war
Doctor Strange: you called?
It's good to see you guys again, I miss reading comments and discussion so much, welcome back!
So how's your last month?
Hope everyone is fine and healthy.
Marvel squad assemble!
This is the way
Theory: the stones don't work here because they're outside the multiverse
That's kind of what I assumed. The TVA probably exists outside time and space.
I’m running this theory that the TVA is itself a Nexus that is just preserving itself to escape Kang.
The Infinity Stones don't work outside of their universes in the comics. (Council of Reeds)
###Loki vs Loki
But which Loki are we getting?
I wonder if Loki thinks Thor is dead since the ship blew up.
Child: *points at devil picture*
Me: I can already smell the mephisto comments
I’m getting huge Control (the video game) vibes from the TVA. I absolutely love the aesthetic.
that end bit when loki is describing the illusion of the weak, that made me really sad
“I’m actually a fan.”
Join the club Mobius
DB COOPER WHAT THE FUCK
“I was young and stupid…
And I lost a bet to Thor.”
I love how everyone was thinking it'd be big but no lol it was just Loki shitposting essentially
Your savior is *almost* here!
This is glorious
I feel like it’s 2011 again :)
Loki being non villainous is already disconcerting. But also typical Loki complaining about everything
Was that Tom’s bare ass?
Loved how when Loki strapped the time neckpiece on the guard who was beating him, he started throwing her back and forth in different stages of time just to spite her.
Now that's the Loki I love.
“You can smell the cologne of two Tony Starks.”
Sick burn on a dead man, Loki. Show some god damn respect. ;)
Okay but of course we knew Loki could see a time heist from a mile away
I'm imagining him standing there, trying to imagine why these Avengers weirdos are fucking with *themselves* like that.
I love, love, love that he assumes it’s to try and stop a future galactic tyrant version of himself.
He doesn’t know Tony’s dead, cut him some slack
Now that he works for the TVA, everyone is both alive and dead depending on what door you use.
The last time he was near Tony Stark, there were literally two Tony Starks, and one of them was wearing emergency Axe body spray. So a sick burn but also literally true.
Out of all the three MCU shows first episodes so far, Loki has been my favourite
Pillboi's still a goober I see
Least he has a job
I'm going in without seeing the trailer so I'm pumped!!!
I want that city image as my desktop background.
lol skip intro. As if, Marvel, cmon
Loki had a pretty balanced experience in this ep. On one hand he had suffer through Thor The Dark World, but on the other he got to enjoy Thor Ragnarok!
**All aboard the sacred timeline**
Loki crying = me also crying
loki was literally told he was a plot device
Loki: "This is a nightmare"
Mobius: "No that's another department"
Loved that subtle hint.
mobius did better psychoanalyzation of loki in 5 minutes than dr. raynor did of bucky in full on sessions
Aw I wish they hadn't put the DB Cooper joke in the trailers.
I've never heard of DB Cooper, and just Googled it. Wow, that is fascinating
The scene in the show *really* confused me lmao
Casey, the man who did not know what a fish was, could have been the most powerful person in the universe with all those infinity stones.
And they're sitting in a junk drawer
being used as *paperweights*
Kevin Feige: "[Loki] perhaps will have more impact on the MCU - more than WV & FatWS"
Casey: "Some of the guys use them as paperweights"
It would be absolutely hilarious to show a scene where they arrest a deviant Thanos. Especially during the height of his power, seeing him being forced to grab a ticket and sign forms would be amazing
Hello, fellow 3 AMers. Missed you guys. Can’t wait to do this every week again!
