How are they even tracking each others stats during the game?

richmuhlach

The jumbotron displays the main stats for each player, so in this case they would have all known he was 1 rebound away from a triple double.

LaFlamaBlanca_33

Because the NBA is more about personal branding than anything else

TrafficThen

KPJ is a young player and was very close to his first triple double. If your team had a healthy win and you were one rebound away from one, you’d be a little upset. His teammates noticed he was close and decided to be bros

LaFlamaBlanca_33

What’s an inorganic triple double worth vs an organic double double with 9 rebounds? This recent trend of forcibly effectuating individual accomplishments waters down the accomplishment imo.

TrafficThen

I understand that point, Westbrook leads the league in triple doubles and you could say majority of his aren’t “organic.” People just know what to do to get them nowadays, it doesn’t really anger me lol let the players do what they want if it results in a win

ShaneCoJ

Amen. The N in NBA stands for Narcissist.

Soothsayerjr

It would be great if my teammates did this in NBA2K

Chef_Buckets

It’s been years since I’ve had a Triple Double on Pro Am ngl

paixism

Westbrook’d be proud

playboixx

what does this mean

YoungWazir786

A triple double is the term used in basketball for when a player achieves double digits in three counting categories. The categories considered for triple doubles are points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. In this instance, Kevin Porter Jr, the player who secured the loose ball after the shot was missed, which constitutes a rebound, managed to grab his tenth rebound of the night to accompany his double digit points and assists. A triple double is a fairly special statline, and as such, his teammates decided to be supportive and didn't secure the ball, and even got out of the way of the ball, so that KPJ could grab his rebound and get his career first triple double. I'm really proud of KPJ, last year around this time he was in a really bad place in his life, dealing with a bevy of mental health issues, and now here he is in a team that supports him with a chance to flourish. All around good vibes and definitely an r/humansbeingbros moment

InvalidUserNemo

Gave you my freebie to help keep this up. I don’t watch basketball and I kinda got what was going on based on context but your comment made it all make sense. This was a full blown “sportsmanship moment” that’s hard to acknowledge in a sport you’re unfamiliar with. Thanks for this! Edit: I freakin’ love when athletes do shit like this. They are aware of the awesomeness/sanctity of the triple double here and recognize the score so they “nope out” until dude gets it to complete his trifecta tonight. This is the kinda sports I love!

YoungWazir786

Thank you :) and you're welcome

Organixs4life

How does it feel to repeat yourself because people don’t read comments. Lol.

YoungWazir786

Eh copy paste isn't too bad and free karma, not the worst tradeoff for annoying redundancy

Organixs4life

Lol. It’s just funny people always ask the same shit another person did a few comments before.

ratmouthlives

It amazes me how professional athletes can delete with mental health issues in the spotlight and even come out better.

YoungWazir786

He actually needed to step out of the spotlight, he was traded from his team and immediately assigned to the g league (nba's second tier league for talent development, very low exposure) So even then, not many can deal with mental health issues with eyes on them Though ones gotta commend the rockets for having the infrastructure to help him

ratmouthlives

That’s great to hear the front office was cool with him working things out. He did his part and now look at him. Sick

Ok_Present_6508

I appreciate this explanation so much. I did not know what this meant either and I was afraid to ask.

notananthem

I don't read this subreddit a lot, browsed to see if it was indeed a "positive" sub, but the amount of sort of "gaming human emotion" posts was gross. This seemed legit funny/nice, and your comment explaining not only context but outlining his progression, was what I was looking for, even despite a bunch of others' toxic comments surrounding the player, the NBA, random things. Thank you!

mostavis

It means last week I fucked around and got a triple double

Satans-Dirty-Hoe

bro what u do lmao???

mostavis

I feel old now...

jumbybird

It means he couldn't earn it, so they let him pad his statistics by giving him a free rebound that he didn't have to work for.

Auslo17

Didn’t the white guy touch it first? Why does the other guy get the rebound?

richmuhlach

The rebound is credited to the player who gains control / possession of the ball. In this case, the white guy tapped it so it’s still a live ball, so whoever collects it will be the one credited with the rebound.

Auslo17

Oh ok thanks. I gotta say I’m not a fan of forcing this stuff

_RoadHouse_

You seem fun

Auslo17

It’s just insincere and takes away from the true meaning because he didn’t earn it. It’s a slippery slope for other personal achievements, that’s all

BrokenTeddy

"A slippery slope" lmao.

Auslo17

It is, think a little :)

Abel371087

I’m not even a basketball fan but I was right there yelling along with the announcer get the ball!!!!

bigBoyMINION

Everything is big in texas including sportsmanship

ShaneCoJ

God that's weak. It may be nice, but it's not a legit triple double if someone has to give it to you. If you haven't earned it, you haven't achieved it.

Rainfall_Serenade

I don't sports. Can someone translate?

YoungWazir786

I commented above, but I'll copy paste it here A triple double is the term used in basketball for when a player achieves double digits in three counting categories.

Rainfall_Serenade

Oh that's pretty awesome. Gotta love to see it man, thanks for the explanation

YoungWazir786

You're welcome, I'm just happy to see the turnaround in KPJ's life in the last year. Here's to an early milestone of hopefully many in an illustrious career for the man

LifeLikeClub9

Lol

olddog16

But do u really want a triple double like that?

Chef_Buckets

A triple double is a triple double. He’s still earned it and it looks good on paper so why not.

ShaneCoJ

Exactly. Weaksauce.

CurveAdministrative3

Basket ball dummy here..... What is a triple double? and how rare is it to achieve it?

paulhags

It’s somewhat common if you are the best player on a bad to mediocre team (Lebron has 100 from being the best player on the Cavs forever). Unfortunately, getting one doesn’t translate to winning. A triple double is when you get 10 or more (Double. digits) in three (triple) categories (points, assist, blocks, rebounds)

CurveAdministrative3

Thanks for the clarification.

jumbybird

I really hate padding stats. He didn't earn that triple double. And especially when it involves breaking records.

dpatou23

This is Westbrookian and Hardenian chasing stats basketball. Chasing money basketball. They should be chasing wins and not looking up stats whatever the score. They don't even have a winning record. This is on the coach really.

LifeLikeClub9

Someone doesn’t know what the rockets organization is doing rn 💀💀💀

FrickDaOpps

they were up by 15????

Veganpotter1

Totally cool with this if it's a first triple double. Shitty to make a habit of reaching for them though. As for Russ, as a PG that doesn't shoot well, he should get a lot of assists. And as a short guy getting rebounds, it takes a lot of skill to do that. The real issue is the rare game he'd have under 10 points and he's missing tons of shots to get 10

SentientCumSock

can't have fun nowadays?

Charizma02

People out here watching a game and getting mad at the players for having fun playing the game.

notoriousmr

It should have an asterisk.

YoungWazir786

And let me guess, a triple double with an asterisk is still more nba triples singles than you'll ever have in your career?

notoriousmr

Wow great response I’m so speechless!🤡

mitchsn

They're auditioning to be future Westbrook teammates

NO8RAIN

I love my squad

Buck_Tungruffel

I don't get it, but I like it

Nathan-Nice

weaaaak

SentientCumSock

thanks for your input, Nathan. we will pass it on to someone who gives a fuck

Nathan-Nice

thanks for the laugh, cumsock! please send them my regards.
