Oh you mean ewst and weast
east??? i thought you said weast!
Weast? What compass are you reading?
This one sir.
That's west, Patrick
Sounds like something Charlie Kelly would say.
It's not wrong if you're looking at the sky.
Only if you are facing south i think
Imagine this as a giant compass above you in the sky. You're on your back looking up at it.
North points to North, East to East etc.
You can spin around as much as you like but the giant sky compass is still correct.
But east is still east and west is still west
If you have a compass to hand, look at the underside.
We're used to looking down on a compass and map as though we're looking down at the Earth from space.
The image in OP is what you'd see if you were on Earth looking up through the compass towards space.
This is the best comment I've seen all day!
*Eest and weast
yeast and weast
This is the compass one uses when stargazing
No joke I still remember one of my teachers telling the whole class to put our heads down and point north. When she had us look up, an embarrassingly large number the kids were pointing straight towards the sky.
Technically you're always pointing at the sky.
Yeah I was gonna say you could be in hell, looking up, but I like your optimism.
When staring wupwards
Never Weetbix Soggy Eat
I use waffles for the W lol
“Nobody enjoys Soviet Womble”
Woah now buddy
Oh I love SovietWomble. It’s a quote from Cyanide in one of the PUBG Bullshittery videos.
Fuck...now I remember, lolol
Never eat shredded wheat was how I learnt… don’t know what shredded wheat is, I assume it’s just a posh person’s way of saying weetbix is.
Shredded Wheat is a breakfast cereal, I just ate some. Its not like Weetabix at all, its like bird’s nests.
We always called them haystacks.
Yes, haystacks is also a good description.
cause eating haystacks would be a kragly more enjoyable experience?
You're obviously not an Aussie kid, because "Aussie kids, are Weet-bix kids, and Weet-bix kids, are Aussie kids."
*Apologies to Kiwis if they use the same song and swap Aussie with Kiwi.
[We absolutely do](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyxJaeoY0-k).
Probably the same kids who did the Australian adverts. Kiwi Bunnings adverts on the other hand - same style, jingle, but a broad Kiwi accent. To the Aussie ear, Lowest Prices are jist the Begunning" 😉
Shredded Wheat looks like this. https://www.uncletobys.com.au/products/cereals/uncle-tobys-shredded-wheat/shredded-wheat
Kiwi? Or aussie
I'm a Skip unfortunately. I'd rather lie and say Kiwi as I am embarrassed to that my fellow Australians voted this government in.
Either way, I'm sure we all learned that phrase in Cub Scouts.
Better than what us Americans are managing to do right now. We had the head clown for 4 years and now all the sideshow freaks are still running around flapping their jaws.
The Australian government his headed by a Pentecostal who thought Trump was the best, and is best buds with a leading QAnon protagonist. 😬
Pollies are all as bad as each other. It's real unfortunate that we're all forced to vote for a lesser of 2 evils.
It’s not that bad mate. Quite the virtue signal there…
Found the Aussie
Damn it I came here to post this…
HATE UP VOTE!
Nobody Enjoys Soviet Womble
This is what happens when you live under a common
never worms sour eat is what we'd say here
I only found this out recently - in the UK they're called WeetAbix
The fuck do we have this A for that you guys don't? lol
From memory, Weetabix are shaped differently. Rounded ends and slightly more processed, whereas all Australian breakfast wheat biscuits - Weet-bix, Vita Brits, and the Homebrand/Aldi knock offs are all rectangular
Ooooh, I genuinely thought it was the same product with a different name. Thanks for explaining :)
I think the Southern Hemisphere product is a knock off as endorsed by the Seventh Day Adventist Church that makes it here (they own the Sanitarium Company)
Dude.... Read it anti clockwise
You *could* read it anticlockwise, but its still a wrong compass so I’m not sure what your point is
I ment like "never eat soggy weetabix" not for compass....
Oh.. East? I thought you said “Weest”.
“What compass are you reading’ boy?”
This one sir
„Patrick, that's west! You're fired again!“
It's accurate in the mirror universe
It's for the mole people inside earth
Or sort of, if you go round the back of it.
Never Wheat Shredded Eat
Beat me to it
I like it, but it was "Never Waffles Soggy Eat" where I grew up.
Never wheat soggy eat
How else will kids appreciate the news?
You mean appreciate the NWSE?!
since i cant tell the difference between east and west i thought the crappy design part was the comic sans
I think the font is okay, but they messed up reversing E & W. Also, the 4 point spinner is confusing.
Never waffles soggy eat
I've seen inverted compasses for sighting down the pointer. If you face North, the arrow points North; if you turn to face the west, on a normal compass, the arrow would be pointing at East.
More egregious is the 4 pointed indicator, so even if this were a real compass you'd have no idea where North is.
Yes, even if the directions were correct, that 4 pointed spinner is ridiculous.
Maybe it's an astronomical compass? I had a science teacher in 8th grade say that they switch West and East when it comes to applying them to astronomy.
But why would a playground use one? Nice find, OP! This is pretty crappy.
Yes, not a great teaching display... and the 4 pointed spinner is goofy.
Ah yes, The Mahjong playground
Never weed smoke ever
They were high when they made it.
Must’ve been !
Why is it in comic sans?
EW, don't talk to me.
To the Weast!
Hey, I've never seen the sun come up in the West
I look to the east for the sun to come, but it never does.
Not only did someone design this, someone made it. Then someone bought it (presumably from several choices). Got approval. Then someone installed it.
Did nobody notice?
People sleepwalk through their jobs and say, "It's not my problem" if they notice. I see this more and more.... people doing the bare minimum of work for their paycheck.
How does it look like on the backside? I feel that this sign was put with the wrong side on the front.
Never wheat shredded eat, doesn’t have the same ring
Even the kids gesturing to it like. "Fuck is this?!"
What If its pointing towards the actual east and west
Then the north and south would be wrong
North and south are wrong anyway. North isn't up and south isn't towards the centre of the Earth.
I was assuming North would be facing ahead and south would be facing behind. Regardless it’s all sorts of a clusterfuck
My guess as well.
Never eat slimy worms
There's a sticker on the bottom of overhead cranes that have east and west like this. When you look up at it, it's correct.
It's just for kids growing up on the inside of the hollow Earth.
It’s just facing south
It's written in comic sans
I see you are a man of culture!
Look where they put East and West.
Ya I saw that, as did everyone else in this comment section. I was just pointing out the comic sans.
I like the Comic Sans...looks good for a playground. Didn't mean to insult you, another person couldn't figure out why it was a crappy design and mentioned the font....said they didn't know directions.
And in Comic Sans
An other fellow man of culture!
Southern hemisphere compass?
Now, imagine this with *one* point.
As far as I know, it's always in the same order, no matter what direction is at the top, and is read clockwise. In China, they start with East, then South, West, & North. It also makes a. difference if you're talking true north or magnetic north and compass readings are different than when you look at a map that we read with north at the top. I don't think anyplace has directions in the clockwise order of North, West, South, East, but I may be wrong.
Yes it is.. seems I dropped this:
Mmm yes never waffle soggy eat (nwse)
Oh my god i remember it by that format too😂
Someone stole this from the people who live on the other side of the flat earth.
Slightly ahead of its time I would say. As Magnetic North continues to shift, the compass will be correct in about 500,000 years.
My *possibly* dyslexic ass really sat here wondering what was wrong for a minute. *side question*: do other people not also have trouble with east and west, directions, etc?
From some of the comments, yes. I still need a compass in the car to make sure I'm going the right way on the freeway, if I'm not familiar with the route. I clearly remember giving directions and using restaurants and turns. I tell people turn right on Florida until you see the McDonald's, then turn left, etc. I moved recently and it's awful...all new street names and locations to learn.
Cool, I'm not dumb then lol
Nah you're not dumb! I'm usually okay when the sun is out... rises in east, sets in west, but at night I can really get turned around without a compass. I have an compass app on my phone too.
I remember it because west is to the left of north on maps. Like when I get twisted around I just imagine the map of the US in my head and use that to orient.
Uhhh, what's wrong with it? It's showing the four cardinal directions, in the correct order.
Mmm hmmmm. You might want to return to your dimension sir.
I'm not sure if you're kidding, but the Cardinal directions are N E S W clockwise. It's difficult to know when people are making a joke here.
If you walked over to the other side of that board, they would be clockwise. This is like looking at a compass from below.
What if East is to the left of this picture, how would you expect this to look?
Not joking btw, I'm genuinely kind of confused.
I guess it’s because the arrows point to all directions, so what’s the *point* of the compass?
I guess that's true, but it doesn't seem that uncommon for a toy... and I get the feeling it's not what most of the people here are seeing.
Who says that west is always to the left? That arrow for North is pointing up, which isn't right. I think this is an arbitrary complaint
How are your map skills?
Who said that this was a map?
How about your compass?
OK, I respect that
Actually, as someone said, these are the 4 cardinal directions--N E S W clockwise.
It’s actually correct in some countries.
Some countries have different geological stuff to some.
Found the hollow earth dweller!
The compass doesn't change, my dude. Idk where you heard that, but directions not changing is kinda the point of the whole thing.
I mean they’re wrong, but a geological compass does have east and west flipped.
East and west don't have poles so fair, if you go far enough west you could argue you went east, but every map in every location I currently know of is - E=left W=right. Simply put, cartograpgically speaking, they're not going into that much detail or thought on a design for a playground. It's simply an oversight. Do you see how many kids it may confuse on the assertion of it being a geological compass? It's a clerical oversight. No use in defending an obvious mistake. Kids WON'T get that or take it as a learning experience. It's just bad.
You gotta admit.
Oh no of course. The wall and the commenter I was “defending” are both incorrect.
I was just stating that compasses with the cardinal directions going N, W, S, E do exist. I use one almost daily. It’s just to make measuring the dip and dip direction of geological structures underground easier. It was just a fun fact. It’s an incredibly niche use of a specific compass so I found it amusing that it popped up somewhere completely unrelated.
I get you. No worries. I appreciated the fun fact.
Not to mention the other side likely has it in the ‘normal’ way...
Never worms soggy eat
It’s just a geological compass. Gotta start them early.
At least they got half of it right
It could have been a nice playground display but.....
Never Eat Soggy Waffles, get it right!
...unless the compass is actually pointing east/west correctly, and the photographer is on the wrong side of the thing.
**W E A S T**
People who designed it must have thought of making a steering wheel incorporated into a compass.
Good one! 😊
This is obviously a playground from somewhere like China or Malaysia. When you're on the East side of the planet then the compass starts on East. Obviously I'm not making a joke.
I'm pretty sure those countries don't use our alphabet. A compass uses the earth's magnetic field everywhere. A difference in China, is that they list the cardinal directions starting with East. We say N E S W, they say E S W N, but we both read in a clockwise manner. The posted display would be incorrect in China; even if they put East at the top, it should be East, South, West, North reading clockwise.
One of us must be joking here, and it certainly isn't me.
Wdym? That's not a compass. It cleary says "NEWS". You're supposed to read your daily papers there. \*sigh\*
What about the 4 point spinner? 😊
uhm.. that... uuuh..... to bookmark the page you're currently on in case you wanna take a break. uuh. yes! it's there for that! D:
I think there's probably a steering wheel behind it. So if you stand on the step behind it, it's correct.
Still a bad design though.
What is this, the NEWS board?
I guess so... some people refuse to believe it's an incorrect compass/direction display. 😊
This makes sense when you're looking at the sky instead of the earth. Given the blue background I wouldn't say it's unreasonable.
I'm not going there... my brain is buzzing with people's comments that this display is at a playground in China.
Since the compass spins, it’s very possible the same compass is on the other side. Which would mean this is completely accurate for east and west.
Is just seen from below the earth's surface and looking up. Probably made by mole-people or maybe Chinese.
East should be on the right, and West on the left. Clockwise from top should be: N E S W. Also, the 4 pointed spinner is sorta useless.
Aaah, now I see it. Thank you.
Correct for a surveyors staff compass
Never Wheat Shredded Eat.
the sad thing is, its not even inverted
Yeah the N and the S would have been mirrored
It’s…. It’s…… it’s COMIC SANS!!!!!!
Never waffles eat soggy
That's how I thought it was for a long while
It's super stupid but I think it's backwards because if you were to look at it from the other side it has the same design and it would be forward
I think your looking at it backwards
Never wheat shredded eat.
This just reminded me of how NEWS is a backronym for the cardinal directions.
The letters are in COMIC SANS
Never wheat shredded eat
Some of the comments defending this make me so sad. How the fuck did this get thru all the levels of approval and installation?
I know... many comments defending or explaining this, surprised me.
Mahjong players know what’s up!
they're teaching us mahjong :D
It depends how the sign is rotated. If you're facing South while looking at it, then it's correct.
Than hold it from the left side not the right like c’mon people modern problems require modern solutions
Maybe it's south of the equator?
Its probably just accurate
