Dear Balkanites, what are some of your most interesting hobbies?
By - DrowningAmphibian
I dont know if that counts, but I go around my city removing graffiti. (I cant remember how many communist symbols, swastikas and ss lightning bolts I have removed because THEY ARE SO MANY) I am tired of seeing 15 year old disrespectful twats destroying public property tbh, and this is an unfortunate byproduct of our selfish culture (in Greece). So if you are Greek and reading this STOP DOING GRAFFITI MALAKISMENO
Not even Greek but thank you for your service
Its nothing. But for real, f**k graffiti
When you say graffiti, do you mean just tags or whole murals? Cause sometimes those murals can be really beautiful
>Cause sometimes those murals can be really beautiful
Look, of course there are Graffitis that are "fine works of art", but dont paint them on churches, bridges... property, private or public doesnt matter, that is not yours.
I disagree about the murals, but thats just my personal opinion. It's a fact that youre single handedly making your community a better place, i salute you my dude
There is graffiti and, then, there is street art (you can read about their difference [here](http://www.columbia.edu/~sl3731/graffitiART/)). Street artists are usually given permission for their murals, some of which are even commissioned, as is [this one](https://m.lifo.gr/now/greece/299305/athina-mural-30-metron-apo-6-street-artists-fotografies) for example.
I really do hope you don't go paint over murals without having a clue about their backstory.
TL;DR: Yes I know the difference
I literally wrote that it is ok if they get permission to create graffiti. I erase junk like swastikas, communist slogans and bulls**t in general that just destroys our cities aesthetically. Street art doesnt do that because it is "ART" and it is done "LEGALLY"
You were specifically asked by another redditor if you remove murals and you said you do. That's the comment I replied to.
I agree with you about tagging, but you literally said you remove murals and something blah blah about not practicing their fine art on properties they do not own.
So which is it then, do you remove murals along with graffiti or you don't?
The answer to your question is in the second paragraph of your reply, I remove it if its on properties they dont own and/or they dont have permission to draw on.
How do you go about removing graffiti? Do you literally remove them or cover them with yours? I've seen some German artists covering swastikas with interesting designs like wrapped Christmas gifts.
Depends. Sometimes I Iiterally remove them, sometime by using sandpaper (yes it works on some surfaces) or I buy white paint (most building are white) and cover them. Everything else just gets covered up with black colour, better to have a black "dot" or line than a swastika or communist propaganda. But I prefer to cover them with a colour that matches the walls. :)
I like that. I might just start doing it as well. I'd enjoy my town better without tasteless vandalism.
Bruh my village has a "graffiti" witch basically says: GLORY TO KKE FUCK NATO TERRORISTS AND USA. and other stupid stuff communists write and get hard with.
Jesus fucking Christ when will vandalization of public property is ever going to stop ?
The solution is simple, everytime you catch one of these punks you beat them up and report them to the police. But the problem is deeper than that, it has to do with the "Greek mindset" which is basically being indifferent to anything.
ελα ρε γιλε γτ;;; ουτε αυτα που ειναι καλλητεχνικα και ομορφα;
I do war crimes in my free time, it's very nice.
The Balkans favorite pasttime, along with genocide 👍
I collect old audio stuff. Like vinyl, cassettes, turntables, vintage amplifiers ect.
Niceeee. I collect statues and figurines, so I can always appreciate a fellow collector.
Whats your favorite piece in your collection?
Really hard to say, I have a lot of records and cassettes and it's hard to choose. But from the equipment it deffinetely is my Sony TPS-l2 Walkman (my pfp) It's a rare piece and still works after 41 years and I bring it everywhere with me.
Im curious, if its not a secret ofc, how much did it cost you?
I don't really know since my father got it for me as a present. The seller's original price was 200€ but my father said it was way less because the seller couldn't really sell it.
Thats pretty cool. I can only imagine how much of a vibe it would be to listen to your walkman in the middle of the lake, or in the mountains
i do the same but only with CDs and Vinyl records
I am a member of a photography group. Once a week we hit the streets on a different photographic project. It can be as vague as "colour hunting" (each is assigned a colour and we walk around searching for nice shots where the focal point is of this colour) or as specific as photographing the Acropolis on different light conditions (from natural light before dusk to its illumination when the night falls). Also, once a month we make short road trips to the countryside, to photograph nature and villages.
Do you use DSLR cameras, smartphones, or both?
Only cameras. Most in the group have mirrorless, I still use an old DSLR.
That's cool. I've always wanted to get a proper camera but It's a big investment and I fear that I'll waste my money on something I may end up not enjoying as much as I thought or that I'd rarely use it.
I bought my camera seven years ago and I must have used it about 5-6 times the first five years. I always liked photography, but I was too lazy to give it a shot on my own. Joining this photography group was a game changer.
I know how big of an investment it is, since I want to upgrade by getting a new camera but I always seem to postpone it, even though I already know how much I enjoy spending time photographing.
So, my advice to you is not to spend too much money on your first camera. Don't go buy the latest model or the top lenses. Maybe even buy a used camera at first. Don't let it become too much of an investment.
Also, make yourself a favour and join a photography group, if you do end up getting yourself a camera ;)
Damn, that sounds amazing! Definitely one of the coolest responses so far
Thanks, I do enjoy it very much. Since you like the sound of it, maybe you should try it too!
I actually do something similar to this, but alas, I dont have good equipment nor a group to do it with
Do you have any friends who are interested in photography too or that they would be willing to join you? In any case, taking a shot is something that you do alone, but it is really nice to walk around with company, exchanging views, helping each other with technical issues and generally having fun as a group.
Have you checked if maybe there is an active photography group where you live? Some you can join for free, even if you don't own a camera and you use your smartphone for photographs (there are such options where I live, I don't know how common they are, but they exist).
Ill have to check as im not sure if its a thing here.
As for friends, if they were interested I wouldve strongarmed them into it a long time ago. Sadly none of them are though...
I see... Their loss.
I would say learning languages when I'm bored. I have my fair share of Italian, Spanish and Russian.
Ciao, amico mio!
Μαθαίνω ελληνικά αυτή τη στιγμή :D
Buona forza buon vicino mio. Ne avrai bisogno 😆
Grazie mille :D .
Collect old coins
What kinds of coins do you have?
Mostly from the kingdom of Greece. but i have some foreign ones in fact my oldest coin is an Italian one its from 1861. i have from many former communist states like Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, USSR.
That sounds really cool!! Do you have any pics of them?
Its from 1960 65% silver with king Paul the first
Ive always found old coins to be fascinating, so I have to say, your collection is pretty impressive
[here are all my coins as of August 2020 I've been collecting coins since 2019.](http://imgur.com/gallery/CMu9pac)
How costly is collecting coins?
The coins i get the price ranges from 8-20€ but I'm speaking from the period of 2000 to 1926
There are many factors the distance between me and the seller, how many coins were circulated, year, material (gold silver etc), if he knows the business well he'll know the exact value and not place it too low
Collect CDs, comic books, beer bottles, magnets
I have lots of comics as well!!! What are some of your favorites?
I've recently bought The Long Halloween and All-star Superman. My favorites are Old Man Logan, Born Again, Year One, Hush, various Deadpool comics, Spawn, but my very favorite is Daytripper. Incredible piece of art, look it up
Those are all great picks. I recently managed to snag a first edition copy of Arkham Asylum, highly recommend you check it out if you haven't. Oooh I love Daytripper. The Vertigo stuff really doesnt get the praise it deserves for how amazing it is.
I actually didn't like AA that much
Damn, to each their own I guess. Still, pretty good to see a fellow comic geek on this sub :D
Ofcourse! I forgot to mention Swamp Thing, Red Son and Blankets, love those as well. Started reading 100 bullets, looks fun
Havent read 100 bullets yet.. How is it so far
Intriguing, definitively a cool story
Are there things that everyone does?
Exist, I guess?
For fun??? I do everything to make my day. Usually I play play the piano, I read any book, I practice on tennis or kickboxing, I swim, I annoy my dad and my lil sister or I'll just lay on my bed... thinking about what others think of me.....
What kind of books do you read?
Also... oof, a bit too real. If its any consolation I think you're pretty cool :)
Oh thanks! I like reading any kind of book. I prefer reading Dostoevsky, poetry and shits like this. I like scandinavian detective and mystery stories, like literally anything (except romantic books bc they are disgusting)
I love my Dostoevsky and poetry as well tho I mostly read fantasy or fiction, but Scandinavian detective stories???
Now thats something completely new to me. What's a good starting point to get into them?
Well, the way Yrsa (Sigurdardotir) keeps awake all night is just awesome! Also if you read Jo nesbo you'll understand why I love it so much! agony, terror, fear, are the most beautiful emotions you'll ever feel when you read those books (also the complicated stories)
Thank you! Ill make sure to check em out when I have the time.
