I’ll probably catch some flak for this, but I think the tail is far too long to be a badger. Looks like a porcupine to me, plus the classic waddle walk they do. Very high populations of porcupines in the Adirondacks and Catskills.

crt983

Even the head looks like a porcupine. I agree with you.

tryganon

I agree. Porcupine

Jumpinjackjumanji

My very first thought

Thin-Set-2330

I agree. Depending on where in NY this is, I’ve seen a bunch up in Wellesley island, 1000s islands.

Zoutaleaux

Agree with porcupine! That was my first thought.

Accurate_Quote_7109

Looks like one to me. Used to see them all the time in New Hampshire and Maine.

Laughorcryliveordie

Agree!

Spoiled_Harlot

Agreed! I think it’s a porcupine.

Vintagepeonies

It’s a porcupine. It is their mating season right now, and males travel around looking for as many females in estrus as possible to mate with. Make sure to keep an eye out when you’re driving at night! They’re quite slow moving.

thomawalk

slow moving is an understatement. I was behind a porcupine in the fast lane for an hour yesterday.

ckopfster

No badgers 🦡 in upstate NY. Clearly a porcupine

Accurate_Quote_7109

Really? I didn't know that. I used to see them in eastern MA.

ckopfster

Woodchucks are often called badgers but an American badger is a creature of the American west.

Accurate_Quote_7109

No, I saw a badger. I had a woodchuck in my yard in New Hampshire. I'm used to them. The badger I saw was quite a surprise to us all. Granted, it's unusal, but the are know to be around in Maine, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. This was in the 70s, though.

ckopfster

Wow. You’re correct. There are some known in parts of New England. Learn something new everyday

Moonstone1K

Definitely a porcupine, I live across the border from your state, and this is the exact colouration and size of a momma porcupine I saw this summer.

Vegetable-Army4611

The white on the bar is quills

HortonFLK

Porcupine?

SueBeee

Porcupine for sure. A very relaxed, quills down porcupine

StormChaser234

Thank you all for your helpful comments! I now know that is in fact a very large porcupine! First I have seen on our property. Thanks again for everyone’s help! 🙂

Flat-Year-4840

Is it a badger

helpforwidowsson
